Story
Bud Stanley is an obituary writer who is afraid to live. Yes, his wife recently left him for a “far more interesting” man. Yes, he goes on a particularly awful blind date with a woman who brings her ex. And yes, he has too many glasses of Scotch one night and proceeds to pen and publish his own obituary. The newspaper wants to fire him. But now the company’s system has him listed as dead. And the company can’t fire a dead person. The ensuing fallout forces him to realize that life may be actually worth living.

GREAT narration that I felt captured the tone of the story and characters really well. A delightfully dry funny protagonist and rich story of a career-ending mistake that leads to new life beginning. Would love to read a sequel!

When we join Boyd Varty and his two friends tracking lions, we are immersed in the South African bush, and, although we learn some of the skills required for actual tracking, the takeaways are the strategies that can be applied to our everyday lives.

So many clip-worthy quotes!
Reviewed: 02-21-25
If you are at a place in your life of trying to figure out who you want to be, or what you want to do (what’s your passion?), then this is a great book of navigation!
I prefer educational / spiritual / self-enriching books in story form, and this book delivers an interesting and engaging insight into the life of a tracker.
I have listened to many great audible books, however this book had SO MANY “stop-me-in-my-tracks” moments that I finally HAD to figure out the clip / bookmark feature so I could back and reflect.
Favorite quote: I don’t know where I’m going, but I know exactly how to get there.
If you’re a fan of Martha Beck, you will like this book. She also happened to be a mentor of the author! :)

Turns out if you’re an A student, you can get an A in anything–including men. Change and growth - so relatable - and FUN
Reviewed: 12-13-24
The upfront disclosure of the frequent use of the “P” word was perfect and made this such a joy to listen to! Micaela is a WONDERFUL story teller (a super power I wish I had!) and the way she describes her life experiences and how she changed is enviable. It’s so true that I believe the pendulum swings far in both directions before settling in the middle, and her sharing her “far swing” adventure from the past, and how that fit into her life now, is so relatable. Thank you for the laughs and reflection on my own life!

Eleven long hard years I waited, my heart breaking for our son, who didn’t know his father was coming back. Today, my hands shake as I try to understand what I’ve just learned: my husband has a new wife. This wasn’t part of our plan. Eleven years ago, my husband made a terrible mistake. I sacrificed everything to help him fix it. But now he’s put our son and me in danger again. We had a plan. He broke the rules. But who will pay the price?

Twists Without Usual Darkness
Reviewed: 12-10-24
I’ve enjoyed many of KL Slater’s books, well developed characters, engaging twists and turns, but generally a little dark requiring a fast forward here and there. This was another great story albeit a bit more convoluted but with less darkness, so it balanced for me, no fast forward required. Kept my attention the whole way!

Story
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Story
My darling little boy Albie adores playing at our new neighbours’ house. And after the terrible year we’ve had, I feel so lucky that we can start over in this perfect place, with new friends who treat Albie like the son they never had. He can’t stop talking about the tree house they’re building him, and the cookies they bake together. But as time passes, something starts to feel wrong. Why don’t they ever open the front door more than a crack? They told me they had no children so who does the small pink tricycle I saw in their hall belong to?

Intriguing Storyline with twist

KL Slaters stories always keep my attention, and this one is no exception. Surprisingly turns and it was nice to have a positive ending. A little dark for my taste, only reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars, but still a good story with well moving cadence. Great narrator as well!

Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

Subtly funny for a dark mystery series
Reviewed: 01-24-24
Just love this Detective Dan series!! I am not usually a “dark” (murder and the descriptions) subject fan, but the narrator and the comedic touch by the author is brilliant! Well worth a listen if you’re generally a “lighter/happier” story type fan like I am. Had to grin at the several references to the character’s pelvic floor in the book, but we all get hooked on certain topics at times. Just give this a try, you won’t be disappointed!
