Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

I always enjoy her books, because they always include unpredictable twist and turns that I really enjoy. Also, I can see this book happening in real life, or pretty close to it. I’ve read many news stories about this sort of thing.

Story
Emily Emerson is used to being alone; her dad ran out on the family when she was just a kid, her mom died when she was 17, and her beloved grandmother has just passed away as well. But when she's laid off from her reporting job, she finds herself completely at sea until the day she receives a beautiful, haunting painting of a young woman standing at the edge of a sugarcane field under a violet sky. That woman is recognizable as her grandmother - and the painting arrived with no identification other than a handwritten note saying, "He always loved her."

I enjoyed the story line, but as it went on, I was hoping this was based on a true story, or events. If it was, there were no authors notes to indicate it. The story lagged at times. However, it does make me want to look into Germans in Europe and the U.S. after WW2 leading up to the civil rights movement. Overall it was good. I wish we could give 1/2 stars as well.

As a woman who grew up in the 60s & 70s, recovering from a highly dysfunctional family, I could relate to so much in this book. Abuse like this wasn’t talked about in those times, that I recall. This book is a deep dive in to the various kinds of narcissistic behavior, the tragic consequences of living in that environment, and how to come out the other side.
The book offers various scenarios to help the reader identify their situation. It also offers many ideas for healing including everything from journaling, to meditation, counseling, and even exercises. Use a notebook while reading, and take it a little at a time. Pause frequently, take notes and let the information sink in.
This is a book for deep thinking. It’s a book about perspective and introspection.
