A unique perspective
Reviewed: 04-28-25
I really enjoyed this book. Rinpoche has a unique perspective among the the Buddhist teachers i have studied, and it is such a joy to hear his discussion of Buddhism and how it fits into the western study of the brain. Its very cool to hear about what science knows about our minds and how well it fits into with Buddhist thought. I think this book would be great for a western scientist who is skeptical about Buddhism. And as someone who has experienced a lot of panic attacks myself, it was comforting to hear about his experiences with this condition. Thank you for your great teachers! As a semi experienced meditator and Buddhist Practitioner, his teachings brought me back to my beginners mind and reset myself firmly on the core of the Buddhist teachings

Here Pema provides the tools to deal with the problems and difficulties that life throws our way. This wisdom is always available to us, she teaches, but we usually block it with habitual patterns rooted in fear. Beyond that fear lies a state of openheartedness and tenderness. This audiobook teaches us how to awaken our basic goodness and connect with others, to accept ourselves and others complete with faults and imperfections, and to stay in the present moment by seeing through the strategies of ego that cause us to resist life as it is.

We don’t believe we are worthy of rest unless we burn ourselves out to accomplish it. Our thinking has been limited by disconnection, sleep deprivation, and the unattainable call for perfection. The systems will never give us rest. It is something we must create for ourselves and each other.

Story
What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace—feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted.

A must read book

This was an incredible manifesto of rest that inspired me deeply. It reminded me of my innate desire to rest, reassured me that my drive to rest and play and exist are inherently valid, and educated me on the history of rest being used as resistance. With all of the stories of incredible social justice warriors using rest as a tool to resist the capitalist grind culture, i feel privileged to learn this knowledge, and i feel a responsibility to share this attitude with everyone i know. As a privileged white queer person, my understanding of rest began differently than tricia, but has now converged in this beautiful space. i am deeply honored to hear her story and aspire to be as powerful of a social justice warrior and community builder as she is. She is certainly become one of my paper mentors! Thank you so much for your divine energy, i hope i can meet you one day. May we rest in this divine energy together
