About this listen

We always have a choice, Pema Chödrön teaches: We can let the circumstances of our lives harden us and make us increasingly resentful and afraid, or we can let them soften us and make us kinder. Here Pema provides the tools to deal with the problems and difficulties that life throws our way. This wisdom is always available to us, she teaches, but we usually block it with habitual patterns rooted in fear. Beyond that fear lies a state of openheartedness and tenderness. This audiobook teaches us how to awaken our basic goodness and connect with others, to accept ourselves and others complete with faults and imperfections, and to stay in the present moment by seeing through the strategies of ego that cause us to resist life as it is.

So Many More Places These Days!

Pema has been my go-to guru for years (since I, like she, could not have survived my near-divorce without the help of some calming external help) but this book, clearly without knowledge of the scourge of Covid that was to come, still manages to lift one out of the terrors of everyday headlines and refine that fear into something useful. She is beyond wise (and occasionally very funny) m taking examples from everyday life. She will comfort you too. Blessed be.

In betweenness

Great exploration of groundlessness. In particular, Pema provides a unique view on the heart sutra and how we look for solid ground, and it doesn't exist. 🙏

So grateful for this book

This book covers so many of Pema’s foundational teachings, and yet feels so fresh and inspiring. It is a true treasure, that I will hang onto and hardly recommend to others.

Beautiful

This book literally changed my life. I first bought it in 2003, when I was a broken, angry young man. When I read this I softened. I found love and happiness, things I figured were simply fairytales. Now as I approach 40 I am something I never thought I’d be. A happy man. And it all started with The Places That Scare You.
Do yourself a favour and listen to this. Remember Buddhism is a philosophy not a religion. I know many people who follow the path of the Buddha from many (and very different) religions.
