Story
Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she's descended from magicians, she's skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she's just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won't be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

Story
Once every year, in the city of Sunja, gladiators meet in the arena known as Sunja’s Pit. Some are lured there by the prospect of fortune or fame; others come simply for the thrill of the fight. The games continue for days, until a champion is crowned—or all involved perish. When it becomes clear that to be a Free Trained pit fighter is to live with a mark on one’s head, four warriors struggle to change their lot, both in and out of the arena. But that’s easier said than done, and not everyone is pleased to learn of their plans.

Not sure what else to say. I probably could have skipped this book and continued on quite well. The only thing of consequence that happened was done in less than 30 seconds just before the end. I was probably overly generous with the 2 stars for the story but I do like the characters.

This book was such a great read. I felt a loss when I reached the end of the book. It is a fun melding of a historical romance and science fiction. The world Grace Draven created is facinating and captured my interest immediately. I also like the fact that the author managed to write some very steamy scenes without making it appear as "insert sex scene here".
I would definitely listen to another one of Ms. Draven's books without hesitation.

A century after a devastating volcanic eruption forced Iceland's inhabitants to abandon its shores, the island has become enshrouded in legend. Five years ago, Annika unwittingly endangered that secret, but her sister Källa took the blame and was exiled. Now Annika serves on an airship, searching for her sister.

You don't have to be bad, to be good
Reviewed: 05-22-15
What did you love best about Riveted?
Once again, Meljean Brook surprised me with all of the twists and turns in her rendition of an altered Victorian world. The cast of characters constantly kept me guessing on what they would do next. The two main characters are good people who have an aura of vulnerability about them yet they are also very strong individuals who become even stronger with each other.
Who was your favorite character and why?
David Kentewess! I loved how his character grew along the way and as Annika said becomes even more interesting.
Which scene was your favorite?
I actually found the ending to be quite good. I liked how the author didn't really attempt to tie up all of the loose ends in an unbelievable way but rather how life went on and the struggle in this strange and muddled world continued but with the addition of two more "complete" people.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Definitely the scene on the glacier where David refuses to "give up" Annika and clings to her in desperation.
Any additional comments?
Once again, Meljean Brook has written a not so typical romance with a not so typical cast of characters. I read that someone was not happy with the performance of the narrator however, I do not agree with that opinion. The heroine is very naive about the ways of the outside world and I felt that the narrator's performance managed to convey that without making her sound either daft or irritating. While this narrator has a bit more growing for this type of genre, I felt she did an excellent job.

If you could sum up Heart of Steel in three words, what would they be?
Exciting, Erotic and Entertaining
What other book might you compare Heart of Steel to and why?
I cannot think of a good comparison. Usually the male character in a romance situation needs to be the dominant one or he gives the impression of being weak. Not so with this book. Hats off to Meljean Brook for this not so ordinary cast of characters.
Have you listened to any of Faye Adele’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, The Iron Duke. Often when I listen to the second book in a series by the same narrator, I feel as though I am listening to the same characters as I did in the previous book. Not so with Faye Adele's performance. She is very good at her craft.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I found myself at times laughing out loud (and sometimes to my embarrassment). Meljean Brook has written some darn witty lines in this book.
Any additional comments?
If you are looking for a steamy romance with an exciting plot and an intriguing cast of characters (including zombies and villains) then this book is for you.

A perfect balance of passion and plots
Reviewed: 05-22-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story plot with an intriguing twist on the Victorian era as well as a dark and passionate romance.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Iron Duke?
That is the interesting thing about this book. Each moment is a wonderful build on other moments so it would be hard for me to isolate just one or two as a favorite.
What about Faye Adele’s performance did you like?
She is definitely a voice actor and not just a narrator. I felt as though her voice led me through the author's world and not just recited it.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Hmmm. Even in a world turned upside down by greed, prejudice and the need for power, love, acceptance and redemption can be found.
Any additional comments?
This book is great if you like a good mature romance with just the right dash of mystery and intrigue. I found the characters to be quite entertaining and the descriptions of the places and people to be just the right amount to lure me into the author's world without making me feel as though I needed to fast forward past anther long description of someone's attire or the color of the sky.The romance builds at what I considered to be a good upward pace. I found Rhys' dark and controlling behavior to be alluring. Mina's character is a wonderful blend of strength and intelligence with a touch of innocence. The rest of the cast of characters were also good and added the right amount of humor, anger, mystery and wisdom. Definitely an entertaining read.
