Story
Everyone in Foss Butcher’s village knows what happens when the magic-workers come; they harvest human hearts to use in their spells. That’s just how life in her kingdom works. But Foss, plain, clumsy, and practical as a boot, never expected anyone would want hers. When a sorcerer snags a piece of Foss’s heart without meaning to, she is furious. For once a heart is snagged, the experience is . . . well, unpleasant. So, Foss finds herself stomping toward the grand City to keep his enchanted House and demands that he fixes her before she keels over and dies.

While this wasn't the charming cozy fantasy romance I was expecting based on the blurb, I did love this story and our MC, Foss. It took me a bit to warm up to Sylvester but he won me over in the end.
The best character in the book hands down was Cornelius. Cornelius was an utterly delightful kitty sidekick and I adored him!

For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

Scalzi and Wil Wheaton are a fabulous team.
While I will say I really enjoyed this it's not, IMO, as fabulous as Starter Villain or Kaiju Preservation Society.
Read it though, you'll laugh, you'll cringe and you'll cheer at a death (even though that sounds wrong.) Highly recommend.

Adair Finch, the most powerful warlock in the world, is back in business! But first he must complete his pact with a mischief spirit by finding her a human body. Seemingly no easy task, as the mischief spirit is beyond picky about her future body. This book will have you drooling for Báhn Mì
Reviewed: 11-17-24
I only found this because it was on the Goodreads Choice 2024 list. It’s a sapphic YA romance, but not angsty in the usual YA way. The drama here is driven by family secrets, and expectations and none in the ways I would have expected.
It’s really a love letter to Saigon. The street food, the people and their resiliency and strength. It’s beautifully written.
I had to have Báhn Mì yesterday, because the street food descriptions had me salivating.
I’m bumping Saigon up my list of places to visit.
I totally recommend this book for fans of food blogging, learning about cities through food and a good romance.

Story
By all rights, Arch-swindler Moist von Lipwig should be meeting his maker at the end of a noose. Instead, Lord Vetinari, supreme ruler of Ankh-Morpork, has made him the city’s Postmaster General. Death may be preferable to fixing the Postal Service—a creaky, outdated institution beset by eccentric employees, mountains of old, undelivered mail Moist swears is talking to him, and a dangerous secret order. To restore the postal service to its former glory, Moist accepts the help of the tough talking and very attractive activist Adora Belle Dearheart.

Story
Adair Finch is the most powerful warlock in the world, and one of the best private investigators for hire. He has dealt with corporate vampires, murderous werewolves, and even fae royalty. Everything was perfect until he lost one case—the case where he also lost his brother. So Finch retired. From magic. From PI work. From everything. Bree Blackstone, a twelve-year-old witch, doesn’t know or care about any of that except Finch’s reputation. In the middle of the night, she bangs on Finch’s door. Her mother has been murdered, and now the assassin is after Bree as well.

MC Finch is retired and a recluse who doesn't even take care of himself, which 12 year old, Bree Blackstone calls him on when he opens his door to her pleas for help. I loved her asking him if he was a hobo. Bree needs Finch to help solve her mother's murder and help find her Papa, who was taken by the killer.
This book jump starts into action and I really enjoyed the way the narration worked to make it feel like a radioplay. (I freaking love SoundBooth Theater.)
Finch wants to be a hard core Warlock, but he's so squishy. I love that he can't say no to Bree. This was a great read, but I'm not sure it would be as great without Bree and Kull, so more books in the series would need to have them along for the ride too, thankfully that looks possible. Kull is utterly delightful. I have a thing for trickster gods and spirits of mischief tick that box just fine for me.

Zanders: Chicago hockey isn't complete without me—everyone's favorite player to hate. I know my role, and I play it well. In fact, I thoroughly enjoy spending the majority of my game time in the penalty box before leaving the arena with a new girl on my arm each night. What I don't like is the new flight attendant on our team's private plane. She works for me, not the other way around. But I'll be sure to remind her of that, and I can guarantee, by the end of the season, she'll be begging to quit her job.
