About this listen

December 7 is "the date which will live in infamy." But now, Japan is hatching another, far greater plan to bring America to its knees....

The Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor was a resounding success - except for one detail: A second bombing mission, to destroy crucial oil storage facilities, was aborted that day. Now, in this gripping and stunning work of alternate history, Robert Conroy reimagines December 7, 1941, to include the attack the Japanese didn't launch, and what follows is a thrilling tale of war, resistance, sacrifice, and courage. For when Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto sees how badly the United States has been ravaged in a two-pronged strike, he devises another, more daring proposal: an all-out invasion of Hawaii to put a stranglehold on the American Pacific Fleet.

Yamamoto's strategy works brilliantly - at first. But a handful of American soldiers and a determined civilian resistance fight back in the face of cruelty unknown in Western warfare. Stateside, a counterassault is planned - and the pioneering MIT-trained aviator Colonel Jimmy Doolittle is given a near-impossible mission with a fleet of seaplanes jury-rigged into bombers. From spies to ordinary heroes and those caught between two cultures at war, this is the epic saga of the Battle of Hawaii - the way it very nearly was....

I would have enjoyed a sequel to Conroy's 1942 world. Love to learn how his characters got through WW2.

A well spun tale.

Knowing the actual history of the events of the second world war Alternative history Is an enjoyable Excursion Into what might have otherwise been. Robert Conroy In the same vein as Harry Turtledove is a good storyteller Into an Alternative universe That feels very plausible.

A very enjoyable alternative History novel

This book is a book of what might have been, if. We can only speculate on what would have happened if the Japanese had followed through on their plans to take out the fuel storage facilities on Oahu. We, thank goodness, will never know. This book makes you realize just how great our country’s military is. We owe them our lives, literally!

Fascinating Read

This in terms of a military 'what if' it's a good read though it is NSFW. A little too heavy on torture and forced sex. The only complaint is that too many things went right near the end in order for the US to win.

A good what if

The narration is excellent. The story could happen, but the plot seems like there are a lot of assumptions that are probably pretty weak. If you love this series, the book is ok. If you want an introduction, try the other titles about WWI and WW2 from LJ.

Pretty Good but...

General Short and Admiral Kimble were fired imediately after the attack , they made a mistake but they were not given the information they needed to do their jobs. They were not cleared for Magic. I dont think General Short deserves having his nose rubbed into the ground .

1942 was a very interesting story , but unfair to general short who along with admiral kimble were fired imediately after the at

Fairly interesting premise, but the book gets most in the middle and near the end. Not to give away spoilers but the climatic battle is what the Japanese has hoped to inflict on the us. There is little chance they would have done the exact same thing.
Also needless sec scenes that didn’t add anything to the book. Who needs a tape orgy written in detail.
The narrator was annoying too.
Several inaccurate description and use of aircraft and uses. Kept mispronouncing US code names for Japanese planes.

Not that enjoyable.

Could have been an interesting story, total waste of time & money. Shallow, improbable - just plain stupid

Worst Book Ever
