Publisher's summary

Just as the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt, we have become slaves to technology. Our technological tools allow 24-hour productivity and connectivity, give us more control, and subtly enslave us to busyness itself. The Sabbath is about restraint, about intentionally not doing everything all the time just because we can. Setting aside a day of rest helps us reconnect with our Creator and find the peace of God that passes all understanding. The Sabbath is about letting go of the controls one day a week and letting God be God. So how do we do it?

In 24/6, Dr. Matthew Sleeth describes our symptoms, clarifies the signs, diagnoses the illness, and lays out a simple plan for living a healthier, more God-centered life in a digitally dazed, always-on world. Sleeth shares how his own family was dramatically transformed when it adopted Sabbath practices and helps listeners better understand how their own lives can be transformed - physically, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually - by adopting the 24/6 lifestyle.

Sabbath

I appreciate this scriptural outlook on Sabbath. He has a nice balance of personal experiences and Scripture to help emphasize the importance of Sabbath.

Life changing!

I have been inspired to begin keeping a Sabbath. I think other readers (listeners) will appreciate, like I did, that the author doesn't belittle or shame anyone (even Christians) for not already recognizing Sabbath, but encourages us with the incomparable benefits of the gift of the Sabbath.

This audio book is a blessing.

An unexpected challenge

I read this because it was included for free in my subscription and had a strong endorsement from Eugene Peterson.
I wasn't initially wowed, but stayed engaged, and the topic grew on me to a crescendo with the collected quotations on sabbath by great Christians at the end.
I am curious to see how I can and will put this into practice.

Simple and clear illustrations relating to the importance of the sabbath.

I enjoyed the illustrations that were used taken from life experiences. I appreciated the reminder through the Scriptures of the importance of worshiping on the Sabbath. I felt this clarified the meaning of true rest. This was a pleasant affirmation of gods perfect provision through adhering to his holy Scriptures.

Great advice. Missing one thing.

Dr. Sleeth gives a lot of great advice and illustrates many ways that a weekly Sabbath can enhance a person's life. I recommend this book to everyone! It's missing one thing though. Sleeth touches on it here and there, but I think one historical misconception prevents him from really connecting the dots. Every benefit he says that a person can derive from keeping a personal weekly sabbath also applies to a whole community and even a nation, when the whole people keep the Sabbath on the same day. The many scripture passages quoted at the end of the book repeatedly underscore this truth. In fact, the Bible's instructions on keeping the Sabbath require that everyone keeps it on the same day. But which day of the week should that be? Although Sleeth asserts that we can't know for certain which day of our modern week was the seventh of God's Creation, that's not historically accurate. Everyone who believes that Jesus lived a sinless life can know for certain which day of the week is the Sabbath that God intended for people to keep. If Jesus kept the wrong day, then he would have violated God's commandment to remember the Sabbath, which would be, by definition, a sin. The New Testament says that Jesus kept the Sabbath on the same day that all other Jews did, which means the Jews had the right day in the first century AD. We have a continuous historical record since then, and there have been no interruptions in the weekly cycle in all that time, The seventh day of the Creation week is therefore still the seventh day of our modern week: Saturday. For over 1800 years (not 2000!) most Christians have observed Sunday, the first day of the week, as Sabbath, contrary to God's instructions in the Bible, because they didn't want to look Jewish. Every day is a great day to gather and worship in Jesus' name and everyone will derive great benefit from resting one day each week, no matter which day that is, but there is only one day that God set apart for his people to spend especially with him. If your husband or wife set aside a whole day just to be with you, do you think they'd mind if you showed up on a different day?

Refreshing & insightful

I really liked everything about this. I needed to hear the truths contained in this book. The story telling, scripture and quotes all helped in bringing a welcome conviction. The underlying tone is kindness making the challenges presented more palatable. I liked that the illustrations were from personal experience and the points & applications were not always obvious until further unpacked, often later on in the chapter than immediately following the first introduction. This form of example is thought-provoking and engaging and far from pat. As a healthcare worker I enjoyed the scientific & medical analogies a lot as well. I could imagine these things could bore or bog down some listeners who like things more streamlined. Personally however, I enjoyed the meatiness of it all and feel that that in itself spoke to the slowing of pace that Sabbath is all about! I would highly recommend this book to all those in search of rest!

Bible based support!!!!

The author did a good job at making sure to reference The Word throughout his points and used stories to explain the points further. Very well done and it helped me understand a little better of the importance of keeping the sabbath and what it means to God. Worth listening to!

Great lessons to live by

Well written and clearly articulated lessons to learn and live by.
One of the biggest joy I got from the book is the stories.
These stories are worth their weight in gold
