Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town.

The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

A Nightly Favorite!
I'll start by mentioning that I'm British, and it only just occurred to me that the author has an accent! My American children love the stories and have no issues with understanding the narrator. Although, the British factor must be a contributory to their ease of understanding. We play these beautiful stories each night. The accent is very soothing for kids, and as a plus it helps them appreciate and understand diversely beautiful accents. Enjoy! Its a must add.

the kids did not enjoy it
the children weren't interested in listening to this story. they were bored. the accent is thick on this narrator which is hard for Americans to understand. my little ones kept asking me what the narrator was saying which defeats the purpose of buying a audible for kids.
