About this listen

Unique to this title is:

  • An overview of A Christmas Carol
  • A study of the themes present in A Christmas Carol
  • A list of famous quotes from A Christmas Carol

You may of course skip all of it and go straight to the main title if you do not want any spoilers and come back later to the beginning.

Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He was born in 1812 in Portsmouth. When his father was sent to jail because of unsettled debt, Dickens had to leave school and get a job in a factory.

Although he lacked formal education and never had a chance to finish his schooling, Dickens successfully edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, gave lectures and performed readings, and lobbied passionately for social reforms in general, and children's rights in particular.

In A Christmas Carol a mean old man named Ebenezer Scrooge sits at his office on a cold Christmas Eve. His clerk, Bob Cratchit, shivers with cold because Scrooge refuses to spend money on heating. Scrooge's nephew, Fred, visits him and invites him to a Christmas party, as he does every year.

Two gentlemen drop by and ask Scrooge for a contribution to their charity. Scrooge reacts to both his nephew and the two gentlemen with bitterness and venom.

Later that evening, after returning to his dark, cold apartment, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his dead partner, Jacob Marley.

Excellent version of this classic story

Having watched the movies, read (albeit part) of the original book, I was excited to try an audio version of this book. This version did not disappoint. The narrator, Jessica Renfro, enhances the story with her performance....Each character has their own voice and style but it never becomes distracting. If you have always wanted to try Charles Dickens but thought it might be dull, definitely try this audiobook.

A Great Rendition of A Christmas Carol

If you enjoy A Christmas Carol, then look no further. This was an excellently done production, with some extra insight at the beginning of the story. The story of A Christmas grows on me every year. I hated it as a child and have enjoyed it more and more the last few.

Jessica Renfro, as always, does a great job with the narration. Her voices are always so good.

Great version of a great story

This is the third rendition I’ve listened to of this book and eleventh by audiobook giveaways. I love this story.
I enjoy the added bits at the beginning of their audiobooks. Generally there is an overview, study of themes, historical context and/or quotes.

This is the third book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Jessica Renfro ) and I would listen to another. She has good cadence and pacing. She imparts an ominous feel at times. She uses accents to differentiate some characters and does well giving each their own voice.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

Robot Narrative

The narrator sounded like a robot. It was monotone and misses the appropriate inflections.
