About this listen

This adaptation of Charles Dickens's beloved novella, A Christmas Carol, attempts to convey this wonderful story of a covetous old sinner's redemption into a two hour long performance.

In its narration, some slight liberties have been taken to make accessible obscure words and references that some modern listeners may find challenging. The retained dialogues and dialects are those of Charles Dickens and remain faithful to his writing.

Still Exciting and Well Done

A Christmas Carol (Like the Dickens!) is a more modernized version of Dicken's work – by this I mean some of the words and references are updated to be more relevant to today while remaining true to Dicken's writing style and storyline. We still see Ebenezer grow and become the savior for little Timmy and his family but there is a clearer connection to the listener. This new revision continues the theme and emotions of the original in a refreshing way and remains to be just as charming as ever.

Wilbur Edwin Henry recognized the value of Charles Dicken's writing and his story: A Christmas Carol. His revisions to make the story more relatable to today was a huge undertaking and could have changed too much. Fortunately, Henry is a talented writer who was able to revamp just enough. When I review books, I refuse to look at the publisher’s descriptions, so I was a little confused for the first few minutes until I realized this was a deliberate effort in updating the story. It was well done!

The narrator is also Wilbur Edwin Henry and he delivered a strong performance. His accents remained true to the original version and the personalities of each character was made stronger through his narration. His speech was smooth and moved at a good solid pace. I found myself enjoying his narration very much!

This is a very good rendition of the popular A Christmas Carol that allows younger generations to continue to appreciate the story.

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook, it was clear and well produced.
