About this listen
Rediscover the Christmas story.
These tales look at the real Christmas story by those who saw it. Four short stories look at the story of the birth of baby Jesus as seen by the donkey in the stable, the shepherds on a hillside, the star gazing down on the little town of Bethlehem, and the baby's mother, Mary.
Based loosely on the Bible story about the arrival of the baby Jesus, these tales take a refreshing look at the nativity story at the heart of Christmas.
Develop your children's imagination, allowing them to create pictures in their minds and travel to a distant land.
A sweet and simple story of Christmas for children.

Story
When facing the impossible, will you believe? Storm clouds gather over a small Michigan town. As thunder shakes the sky, the lights inside St. Thomas Church flicker...and then go out. All is black until a thick bolt of lightning slices the sky, striking the church’s large wooden cross - leaving it ablaze and splintered in two. When the storm ends, the search for answers begins. James Lindy, the church’s blind minister, wonders how his small congregation can repair the cross and keep their faith in the midst of adversity.

Story
Meryl Streep’s performance of Colm Tóibín's acclaimed portrait of Mary is hailed by the New York Times Book Review as “an ideal audiobook,” presenting the three-time Academy Award-winner in “yet another great role.” Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Colm Tóibín's The Testament of Mary presents Mary as a solitary older woman still seeking to understand the events that become the narrative of the New Testament and the foundation of Christianity. In the ancient town of Ephesus, Mary lives alone, years after her son's crucifixion. She has no interest in collaborating with the authors of the Gospel. They are her keepers, providing her with food and shelter and visiting her regularly. She does not agree that her son is the Son of God; nor that his death was "worth it"; nor that the "group of misfits he gathered around him, men who could not look a woman in the eye," were holy disciples. This woman who we know from centuries of paintings and scripture as the docile, loving, silent, long-suffering, obedient, worshipful mother of Christ becomes a tragic heroine with the relentless eloquence of Electra or Medea or Antigone, in a portrait so vivid and convincing that our image of Mary will be forever transformed.

Story
It’s an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It’s a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne - everything - to rescue the one he loves. The best thing about this Story is - it’s true! And at the center of the story, there is a baby. The child upon whom everything would depend. All the stars, mountains, oceans, and galaxies were nothing compared to how much God loved his children. He would move Heaven and Earth to be near them. Always.

More Entertaining than Most Nativity Stories
Sadly, Christian literature has a bad reputation for boring nativity retellings—like it is a sin to be entertaining (not true!). Thankfully this collection of stories breaks that mold.

Four Precious Stories About the Birth of Jesus
"A Christmas Surprise" was such a wonderful audiobook. I loved it myself and can't wait until my grandchildren get to listen to it. Four different perspectives on the birth of baby Jesus. They were all so precious. I think I liked the donkey's story the best but they were all so neat. I myself will listen to this again because it made me feel good. This is what Christmas is all about to me. I love how it began. Just close your eyes and listen. Great writing by Jennifer Carter and the narration...
Jeffrey W. Goodrich did an outstanding job reading these stories. He has a delightful, pleasant voice that goes perfectly with the book. Through these two amazing artists, this is an excellent way to teach children about Jesus.

Great Concept....
but there were some things I just didn’t like and wish the author had done differently. While I appreciate this being told at a child’s level, I didn’t like the use of slang during the shepherds’ story and Joseph being referred to as “Joe” during Mary’s story.
