Publisher's summary

When Lady Margaret Blake and her sister lose their parents in a boating accident, they are left to the guardianship of their uncle. Disregarding their feelings for the price their beauty will fetch on the Marriage Mart, he arranges a match for both. Lady Margaret, however, has her own views on the matter and takes her fate into her own hands.

Returning home after war to assume his responsibilities, Luke, Duke of Waverley, expects a nice, quiet life on his country estate. Within hours of stepping foot in England, though, he stumbles upon a young woman being attacked, and no sooner does he rescue her than she runs away. His sense of curiosity is piqued and his sense of honor compels him to help her, leading him on a merry chase . . . Meg escapes the marriage, only to find herself at the mercy of others. Fortunately, in the soldier she cannot avoid, she also finds herself in very capable hands. Only her uncle has a deeper reason for his actions and will stop at nothing to see his plans fulfilled.

the narrator made the story worth listening to

The story was okay but this is not my favorite by Elizabeth Johns. The heroin got on my nerves with her silliness of constantly wanting to run away, but there was enough action to keep it interesting. I'm already invested in some of these characters from previous books so I shall continue at least with the next book in the series, but I personally preferred the Knight brothers much more, especially the last in that series which seems related to this series.

Frustrating

The narrator salvaged this story. So much redundancy in character lines. Storyline predictable and dragged out. Love story anticlimactic.

Unexpected storyline!

I always enjoy books by this author and her series are enjoyable to listen to. I enjoyed the plot and the characters. Overall, the dedication to each other, to overcome the obstacles and make the best out of an unfortunate event.
I love the narrator! Alex does a great job and I feel has the best voice for male characters. He’s a favorite of mine.
This series is worth reading or listening to.

Annoying main characters

Meg, the female lead character was so so aggravating. She was so aggravating that she ruined the whole book for me. This was my second attempt to listen......no more. Even Alex Wyndham couldn't save.

Not good

Alex Wyndham is the best narrator I've heard, but a person can only do so much with a weak and silly story line. I bought the audio only for Alex, but not even he can get more than a one star.

Illogical and Ridiculous

AWFUL! I had high hopes the way it began with he uncle selling her and her escaping. Then some intetesting action moments. Until it all fizzles out. The actions of the FMC were ludicrous. Nothing she did made sense. Her thinking & actions were that of a child. The plot was illogical. There is supposed to be some grand spy conspiracy, between the uncle and, others. Then there is a supposed bombshell uncovered which is more like a rain drop because it doesn'tt make any sense!! In fact, it actually contradicts itself.
The love story makes no sense either. Their parents were very close old friends and they were betrothed by neither had heard of the other over her 21 years of life? Is all Soooo stupid!

Too bad because the narrator one of my favorites.
