About this listen

Why does no one understand her? All Sashia wants is to learn, but she is constantly told to stop asking questions and mind her own business. There must be some purpose for her insatiable curiosity. The workings of the human body fascinate her - if only she could learn more! Could injuries be better treated and death itself avoided with a more thorough knowledge of anatomy?

When an itinerant healer and his wife discover Sashia and offer her an apprenticeship, she jumps at the chance. However, life holds even more unexpected twists as she catches the eye of the crown prince of Berush. Will Sashia be able to pursue her career as a healer, or will handsome Prince Cyrus change her plans? With her heart torn between two great passions, which will she choose?

Life is uncertain, and Sashia soon finds some things are out of her control. She struggles to shape her own destiny in a patriarchal society where polygamy is legal and women are subject to their father or spouse.

Slight of frame, but fierce in heart, Sashia will need every ounce of strength she possesses, and the wisdom and support of friends and allies, to endure what her future holds. What other obstacles must she overcome to live her dreams and find happiness?

good ahead. Listen to it.

Embarking on a literary exploration, I stumbled upon A Crack in the Rock's audiobook. Despite being outside my usual genre, I was captivated from the outset. The masterful storytelling weaved suspense and action, immersing me in a thrilling journey. The allure of the opening paragraph pulled me deeper into the narrative, anticipating each twist. Pulse-pounding action scenes and well-developed characters kept me engaged throughout. Though unfamiliar territory, I cherished the unexpected connection to the characters and their triumphs. As the audiobook reached its climactic end, I was left both satisfied and yearning for more. I eagerly await the next chapter in Amber Gabriel's brilliant series. A literary adventure worth embarking upon!

Peter Kenyon is a top-notch narrator and performer.

Drew me in at every turn

I am not usually a historical/period fan. But wow this drew me at every turn especially the details of the interpersonal relationships and struggle with age old customs.

Loved this book!

A Crack in the Rock was well written and entertaining. I loved the narrator’s voice for the king. I was reminded of Sean Connery. The most interesting thing about this story (without giving anything away) is the new perspective I gained through the eyes of the main character. There were several aspects that made me feel as if I were in Old Testament Israel as an eye witness. Loved it!

Sashia the feminist!!

I received a free copy of this audiobook, and here’s my honest opinion: I’m hooked. This is my first fantasy/action romance read in a while. I have to say it was so well written I was anxious to predict what was going to happen next with Sashia. From the beginning she has you rooting for her as you see her desire to learn and do good in the world. She’s the perfect mix of rebellion, strength, and vulnerability. Gabriel put so much detail into developing her character I felt like we were friends! Together we were studying medicine and politics trying to solve Berush’s problems. I enjoyed seeing her relationships evolve. Especially with the father of Cyrus. She isn’t afraid to ruffle some feathers in order to bring about change. I also would recommend listening to the audiobook on Audible. I was impressed with the voices and character changes. Looking forward to listening to more books written by Gabriel!

I swooned a lot. so good!

I listened to this audio version of this book and let me tell you, I loved it! The narrator, Peter Kenyon, did an amazing job!! He kept it so interesting! And then there's the story itself! Sashia and Cyrus are my favorite characters, but there are many other great characters in this book. If you love adventure, suspense, and romance, this is the story for you!

a feminist in a man's world.

A Crack in the Rock is the first book in The Edge of the Sword Series by Amber Gabriel.

This novel follows the main character Sashia from childhood, well into her adult life. As with real life, growing up never seems to take you where you want to go.

Sashia's story feels like that of a modern woman sent back to ancient times. She struggles to be respected as a healer and has to navigate a society that can force her husband to take a second wife.
The worst part is that the husband isn't even a jerk. He is perfect and totally in love with Sashia. Despite the characters making the best of a bad situation, I kept wishing that Sashia and Cyrus would find a way out of it.

It reminded me too much of how the old testament kings took multiple wives and ruined everything instead of just having one like God wanted. I did like the second wife as a person; she was a sweet character. But I still wish she had found her own love.

I listened to the Audiobook version and the narrator, Peter, did a fantastic job of voicing the characters, even the woman. His narration made the story easy to follow and kept me engaged even through some of the slower periods of Sashia's life.
