After years of mistreatment, the Israelites prepare to defend themselves against the oppressive Canaanites. Readying for war not only takes secret military training but also an Israelite leader who is willing to both stand against generations of oppression and follow God.
Deborah, a young Israelite woman, lives a quiet and isolated life with her father and brothers. As a shepherdess in the hills near her home, she knows well the perils of her work. But when faced with incredible danger, she witnesses a series of remarkable events that preserve her life. The hand of the Lord is apparent, and it is clear that hers will be no ordinary life. Years later, Deborah is a faithful wife and mother when she learns that the Third Judge of Israel has died - and she has been called to take his place. It is a tumultuous time in history, and soon, Deborah - prophetess, judge, and military leader - faces a seemingly insurmountable task: alongside the commander of the Israelite army, Deborah must lead ten thousand soldiers in their final campaign against their Canaanite oppressors with only her faith in God to guide her.

As always, it's totally appropriate to take liberties with personalities & character building when there are not many facts to go on. But it bothered me how meek & shy she was written. As if she wanted to be a quiet traditional-house-wife & had to be pushed out is her comfort zone & needed the approval of all the men in her family to find the courage to serve God as the Judge of Israel. I don't buy that. A true Judge doesn't need man's approval, only God's. & The narrator made it SO MUCH WORSE!!!
SHE GAVE HER A FRAGILE, BREATHY, TIMID SHY VOICE!!! IT WAS SO ANNOYING!!! Yet the voice for Jael, a neutral outsider, was given so much confidence & elegance, without a hint of arrogance ~ THAT would have made a perfect Deborah character. I know it's all speculation, but it made it very difficult to believe & finish the story. Most of the Men's voices were also stoic, slow & monotone. Clearly, the author & narrator have never met anyone named Deborah. Every woman I've met named after this powerful military leader of God has a strong voice & a will of iron, lol.
A sweeping tale of victory, but disappointing personalities & awful narrator
