About this listen

“Jack Higgins has written some of the best suspense fiction of the past 50 years,” wrote the San Diego Union-Tribune, and The Strand Magazine agreed: “With fresh plots, interesting characters and vibrant settings, Jack Higgins has firmly cemented his reputation as one of the world’s most successful thriller writers.” And in his new novel, a devil is indeed waiting...

The President is coming to London, but not to an entirely warm welcome. A fanatical mullah is offering a blessing to anyone who will assassinate the President, and though most London Muslims think the mullah has crossed the line, a few think otherwise. Urgently, Sean Dillon, General Charles Ferguson, and the rest of the small band known as the “Prime Minister’s private army” are called in, augmented by an extra-ordinary new recruit, an intelligence captain and Afghan war hero named Sara Gideon. She has her own contacts and ways of working, but the more she explores the threat, the more she discovers herself in a very dark place indeed.

What did you like best about A Devil is Waiting? What did you like least?

I liked the character Sara - (my grandmother's first name) - because she was tough, and went after what she wanted and got it.

What could Jack Higgins have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

This story had too much "he said" "she said", and to much conversation about people. It was hard to follow; I was half way through the story before I was able to distinguish between the good guys and the bad guys. Sometimes that is okay, but it seemed to me that Higgins intended for the reader to know this before half way into the story. Also, there was very little suspense to the story. Not until the end was there really any "thrill factor". and even then, well it was "thin". Seems to me that Higgins jumped on the al Qaeda "bandwagon", used that topic to tell a story, but the story was not very engaging.

Which character – as performed by Michael Page – was your favorite?

Sara

What did you like best about A Devil is Waiting? What did you like least?

The fast pace is always present in Higgins books. Too predictable and not too believable.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

try to make it a little believable. It is too much like most of the other books by Higgins.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

no.

Any additional comments?

Good in a Higgins sort of way, but I am tiring of the same themes, not much changes book to book. Too much killing.

Where does A Devil is Waiting rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've read almost all of Jack Higgin's books and have never been disappointed. I'm just starting to listen to audiobooks, and this has inspired me to listen to many more. It's amazing how this performer could do so many voices so well and one right after the other.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The new female protagonist was a nice addition to the usual cast. Always enjoy the regulars.

What about Michael Page’s performance did you like?

His ability to change voices so easily and capture the personality of each person.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not an extreme reaction. It held my attention, however, and had a good amount of drama and excitement.

Any additional comments?

I definitely recommend checking it out.

This story line and the characters are so stale. Doesn't come close to the earlier novels.
