Publisher's summary

Laura Amy Schlitz delivers this Horn Book Fanfare and Cybils Award-winning best-seller that whisks 11-year-old Maud Flynn from a cold New England orphanage and into the stately mansion of three wealthy spinsters. After the Hawthorne sisters adopt her in 1909, they tell her she's their secret child. She must remain indoors at all times and must never stand in front of windows. Since these old ladies treat her so well, Maud doesn't mind their restrictions. But she does wonder what could possibly require such secrecy.

Will keep you guessing, what will happen next!

Maude's story is both intriguing and heartbreaking. from the moment I met the sassy orphan; I wanted to hear more. From her terrible time at the asylum, orphanage, to the three elderly sisters who adopt her, nothing is ever what it seems.

Loved it!

Such a fun and interesting story! The characters are all so “brought to life.” Maude is especially likeable. The narrator does a fantastic job.

Wonderful story

The story is well written and narrated beautifully by Alma Quervo. Each character is given a distinctive voice. I love how Ms Quervo did this. Anyone can listen to this audiobook. It will not upset sensibilities to young or old. In other words, there is no garbage in this tale you have to watch for or be surprised at. I highly recommend it. You’re going to love it.

I was. It expecting to love a free audible as much as I did this one. It is one of those stories you’d like to just keep going. The narrator was amazing as well!

loved it!

This was fascinating -- I was drawn into the story almost immediately and found myself taking a longer route to work so I could listen just a bit more. The storyline is excellent, and if you love melodramas, this one will keep you happy for many hours.

A wonderful novel full of intrigue & emotion!

To tell you too much about the plot of this book would rob you of the suspense that it so beautifully builds up as you listen. By adopting Maud, the 3 spinsters she comes to live with have made her a vital part of a conspiracy. Maud clearly understands that if she does not comply with the scheme they have developed, she will likely be sent back to the orphanage she was so happy to get away from. Will the scheme work as planned? Will Maud dutifully carry out her part? I was so anxious to get the answers to these questions that I regretted having to stop listening to go do other things. And along with the interesting twists and turns of the plot, there is a wonderful current of emotion flowing throughout the story – the longing of an orphan for a loving mother and caring family. But please don’t think this is some soppy tear-jerking tale – Maud is a smart, spirited, strong-willed girl and not a meek wallflower. The characters have distinctive personalities and are well defined. They are also all excellently voiced by the narrator, who is a perfect match for this story.

I hope you will give this book a try. It is so well written that I was completely invested in it and couldn't wait to find out what happens next! It was clear to see why it had won 2 awards when I finished my first time listening to the complete story. I have already listened to it twice now and am sure I will listen to it more in the future. I want to keep company with these characters again and again.

The best one yet! Great story and narration

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Drowned Maiden's Hair?

I enjoyed every bit of it. However, the fire scene was very exciting.

Which scene was your favorite?

I thought the scenes with Miss Kitterage were fabulous. I just love to hate her!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end, of course. I had high hopes for a happy ending and wasn't disappointed.

Any additional comments?

Ms. Cuervo did a terrific job with the narration, changing her voice to match the characters. Her pace was excellent. I will look for her again.

I've read this book 3 times.

Even after my 3rd read of this book, it never gets any less interesting. Maud is a fascinating protagonist and the plot is fantastic. This is the sort of book you can read over and over again

Lovely

This might be categorized as a children’s book, I very much enjoyed it even as an adult. It isn’t written “down” to a child’s level. Excellent narration.
