About this listen

From the bestselling author of RESTART, the story of a middle-school "band of brothers"—five friends who need to stick together after they set up a hideout in an abandoned bomb shelter and discover that the only way to be true friends is to reveal their secrets and help each other out.

The morning after Hurricane Leo rips through the town of Canaan, residents awaken to widespread destruction—power outages, downed branches, uprooted trees, broken windows and damaged roofs. Four eighth-grade friends—Evan, Jason, Mitchell, and CJ—meet to explore the devastation. The tight-knit group is dismayed to find that Evan has brought along a stray—Ricky, who is new to their town and school, and doesn’t have any friends yet.

Ricky is the one to find the strange trap door that’s appeared in the middle of the woods—the door to an old bomb shelter, unearthed by the hurricane. Inside, the boys find a completely intact underground lair, complete with electricity, food, and entertainment (in the form of videocassettes). The boys vow to keep the place’s existence to themselves.

Things soon get tense. Some bad locals keep snooping around. And what started out as a fun place to escape soon becomes a serious refuge for one of the kids who is trying to avoid an abusive home situation. In order to save the shelter, the friends must keep its secret... and in order to save themselves, they’re going to have to share their individual secrets, and build the safest place they can.

My 2nd favorite book

I love this book, if you have not read/listened to this book yet, i just wanted to clarify the main charter is CJ and not Evan, anyway i love this book sooooo much!!! there is mystery and a small touch of violence, and it does have a kid with OCD in it, just a heads up because it might make you feel bad if it has misinformation, back to the book i love how long the book is, and low cost for what it is. i reccamend this book to 8+ just because of the violence. if your wondering what my favorite book is it is Resart another great book from my favorite author Gordan Korman!!!! :) read/listen now!!! you won't regret it.

Excellent Middle Grade Story

I bought this for a road trip with my 13 year old grandson, and I honestly don’t know which of us enjoyed it more.

Each of the characters was dealing with their own real life issues, but that wasn’t the focus of the story. The book was actually about friendship and different types of “family,” and the joy of discovering a secret bomb shelter in the woods and being able to make it into a much needed fort.

The book was good, the audio version was good, and I highly recommend it to … well, just about anyone who is 11-15, or who has EVER been 11-15.

Another great Gordon Korman book

My son and I listen to these books together in the car and always love Gordon Korman stories. The Fort was a great story but what was especially impactful was the real world complications in families. The dynamics between the kids in the story in relation to what they have going on at home really made this story. Plus it brings awareness to these situations to kid listeners that may not be aware of complex issues in families.

#100 is the Best of Korman

I love MG mysteries with families and I couldn't wait to read THE FORT. I guessed it was an adventure. As usual Gordon Korman's characters and plot surprised me with its unpredictably. He is adept at multiple POV voices. All the characters are relatable and they develop slowly as conflicts build in this imaginative, contemporary story of 5 boys who find a secret hideaway in the woods near their homes. Each boy (+ 1 girlfriend) has issues with family that readers of all ages can understand and grow to like.

Very enjoyable listen.

A lot of characters but not overwhelming. Easy to keep up with and really fun to listen to. Highly recommend.
