A young girl raised by a witch, a swamp monster, and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon must unlock the dangerous magic buried deep inside her in this epic coming-of-age fairy tale from the highly acclaimed author of The Witch's Boy.

Every year the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster named Glerk and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, Fyrian. Xan rescues the abandoned children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.

One year Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. When Luna approaches her 13th birthday, her magic begins to emerge on schedule - but Xan is far away. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Soon it is up to Luna to protect those who have protected her - even if it means the end of the loving, safe world she's always known.

The acclaimed author of The Witch's Boy has created another epic coming-of-age fairy tale destined to become a modern classic.

I listened to this on Audible and loved it! A cleverly written novel that enchanted me from the very beginning. This fantasy is the story of love helping overcome miscommunication. If you enjoyed Harry Potter, put this on your must read list!

Read very well, and almost similar to an adult fairytale. It's an easy, fun listen.

A fun listen!

A wonderful story about the corrosiveness of sorrow and the healing properties of love. Wonderful characters, lots of changing view points, and an untrustworthy storyteller.

Fabulous Narrator

I knew I would love this story... but I had no idea how wonderful it would be to listen to it rather than read a printed copy. Christina Moore voiced these characters with amazing ability. In awe. I will search out other books she may have performed.

This story is just beautiful. It's a story of love and perception. And acceptance. And how family isn't always blood relatives.

Excellent narration!!

I first enjoyed this book over a year ago. I loved it! Touching and fascinating, funny and adventurous. The most creative story I've heard in a long time. And when it was my turn to choose for my book club, I knew this was the one. We all marveled at the beauty in the prose; every one of us would give our eye teeth to have a "simply enormous dragon"! I enjoyed it even more the second time through. So many scenes run through my mind: Luna skipping along, making flowers pop up, the paper birds whirling around Antain, Fyrian with a suddenly huge nose, the madwoman pulling sheets of paper from thin air. The characters are rich and full. The story is a puzzle, working its way together to reveal a beautiful picture at the end. This is a story I recommend to all my friends, especially those looking for a story to share with their middle-schoolers. I can't wait to read it with my nieces and nephews.

This was a magical story narrated by an amazing story teller. It’s a story of magic and witches both good and bad, but mostly it’s about the power of love.
