About this listen

A young girl raised by a witch, a swamp monster, and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon must unlock the dangerous magic buried deep inside her in this epic coming-of-age fairy tale from the highly acclaimed author of The Witch's Boy.

Every year the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster named Glerk and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, Fyrian. Xan rescues the abandoned children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.

One year Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. When Luna approaches her 13th birthday, her magic begins to emerge on schedule - but Xan is far away. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Soon it is up to Luna to protect those who have protected her - even if it means the end of the loving, safe world she's always known.

The acclaimed author of The Witch's Boy has created another epic coming-of-age fairy tale destined to become a modern classic.

Beautiful story with outstanding performance

I loved this book! The story is compelling, loving, adventurous, and so, so very engaging. Christina Moore does an excellent job keeping the different characters separate and recognizable. Lovely.

AMAZING

I read this book for my book club and just for my book club but I didn’t think I would like it that much but I think it’s a really good book and the only reason it does not have five stars for the story is because it’s really sad close to the end but overall I would totally recommend this book for kids and adults

suspending beautiful, creating its own space

Few are the authors who by their world building, narrative, and character moods and voices that suspend us and leave us floating in the relaxed between of our imaginations unfolding like dreams while waking.

For those who loved the 'Ocean at the End of the Road' a masterpiece of Gaiman, or the rich space is in a 'Wise Man's Fear and the Name of the Wind. Who might also have been suspended by the breathe and colors of 'Warbreaker,' this book is for you and your Children too.

It is packed with wisdom in the form of empathy.

Beautiful story with depth

I love this story! My grandchildren and I listened to the story in the car. We were amazed at the number of voices provided by 1 person! It sounded like several different people. The story is beautifully developed with beautiful detail and in-depth characters. A great story for all ages.

wow. just wow.

The narration was perfect! the story was moving and sweet and dark and complex. It would be a beautiful book to listen to with children. I'd want to read it aloud myself, but I know I'd be hearing Christina Moore's rendition in my head, and I'd never live up.
