About this listen

What happens when, on a perfectly ordinary evening, all the things you believed in and took for granted are turned upside down?

When her husband of more than 20 years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. It’s a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends a good marriage.

Great story

Would you listen to A Good Marriage again? Why?

I read it previously in Full Dark, No Stars. I would read it again but not this audio version. The narration was worse than horrible. The sing-song fake sounding voice did not match the dark story. She actually sounded like a cartoon character when she spoke as Darcy. I've listened to at least 200 audio books This one was bad, bad, bad. It should be pulled and narrated by someone else, in my opinion.

Didn't see that coming.

Good book. Not like any other book of Mr. King's. Take a listen. You won't be disappointed

Excellent Narration!

Jessica Hecht narration of this Stephen King story is by far the best performance I have ever heard. As a 42-year fan of Stephen King novels and short stories, I believe Ms. Hecht, truly, did justice to an excellent King short story.

Getting Away With Murder?

What did you love best about A Good Marriage?

This is the story of a woman who has been happily married to a good man for many, many years. He's never been anything but good to her and a wonderful father to her children. But one day, while she's looking for something in the garage, she finds his secret hiding place. A box that is full of something that will change everything she thought she knew about him. Can she keep that secret from him? Can she live her life and pretend that she doesn't know that her husband is not who she thought he was? What would you do? Would you want to end a marriage with a man you'd loved your whole life? It's a good story. Stephen King doesn't tell bad stories. The narrator was a bit annoying when she did the wife's voice but the story was good enough to overlook that. I would recommend this one. It's good.

Buy Full Dark, No Stars

Any additional comments?

This is a good story with good narration so I can't mark it as a bad, but the description is misleading. This is a single story out of the collection Full Dark, No Stars. I still feel cheated.

Narration nearly ruined the story; HORRIBLE

Would you consider the audio edition of A Good Marriage to be better than the print version?

I didn't read the book, but there is NO DOUBT IN MY MIND that the book would be better than listening to this HORRIBLE NARRATION. This woman's voice and performance style almost made me trash the book. I was only able to finish because it is such a short one. I saw the light at the end of the tunnel or she would have ended it for me.

Has A Good Marriage turned you off from other books in this genre?

No; this is just my style of story.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jessica Hecht?

Honestly? ANYONE ELSE! Hands down the worst narrator I've ever listened to. No offense to Jessica Hecht, as I'm sure she's a wonderful person, but wow, annoying as all get out.

Who was the most memorable character of A Good Marriage and why?

The detective. He has an interesting persona. Stephen King always does such a great job of character development and even with just a brief interlude with this guy you like him.

Any additional comments?

If only a different narrator was cast I could give this a better rating. But I just barely made it through strictly because of her voice and style.

Annoying narrative, good story

I'm not a Stephen King fan per se but my bookclub is reading this story so I chose to play along. The story was good but I think I would've enjoyed it more if I would've read the text instead of listening to the audiobook. The voice of the narrator really started to get on my nerves when she was speaking as Darcy.

Great, Quick Read!

I really enjoyed this book. Quick read but quick and gets to the point, no wasting time.
