About this listen
LT has a theory about pets, particularly his Siamese cat. It had been their cat, not just his cat, but that was until he came home one day to find a note on the fridge from his wife saying she had left him.
Recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall in London, this story demonstrates yet again that no one can tell a tale like Stephen King. Available only in audio!
These unabridged selections also appear in the print edition of Everything's Eventual. More unabridged stories from Everything's Eventual are available in Blood and Smoke, Riding the Bullet, "The Man in the Black Suit", and Everything's Eventual.

Story
Alden McCausland and his mother are what they call “accident rich”; thanks to an unexpected life-insurance policy payout and a winning Big Maine Millions scratcher, Alden and his Ma are able to spend their summers down by Lake Abenaki, idly drinking their days away in a three-room cabin with an old dock and a lick of a beach. Across the lake, they can see what “real rich” looks like: the Massimo family’s Twelve Pines Camp, the big white mansion with guest house and tennis court that Alden’s Ma says is paid for by “ill-gotten gains” courtesy of Massimo Construction.

Story
Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis. In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low-grade - but escalating - battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice.

Dean Evers, an elderly widower, sits in front of the television with nothing better to do than waste his leftover evenings watching baseball. It’s Rays/Mariners, and David Price is breezing through the line-up. Suddenly, in a seat a few rows up beyond the batter, Evers sees the face of someone from decades past, someone who shouldn’t be at the ballgame, shouldn’t be on the planet. And so begins a parade of people from Evers’s past, all of them occupying that seat behind home plate. Until one day Dean Evers sees someone even eerier….

Story
In a pulls-no-punches essay intended to provoke rational discussion, Stephen King sets down his thoughts about gun violence in America. Anger and grief in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School are palpable in this urgent piece of writing, but no less remarkable are King's keen thoughtfulness and composure as he explores the contours of the gun-control issue and constructs his argument for what can and should be done.

It’s the place where Pete Simmons goes when his older brother, who’s supposed to be looking out for him, heads off to the gravel pit to play “paratroopers over the side”. Pete, armed only with the magnifying glass he got for his 10th birthday, finds a discarded bottle of vodka in the boarded up burger shack and drinks enough to pass out.

Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Story
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Story
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

When Heather McKinley dreamed of becoming a doctor, she imagined curing sick kids and sporting pink stethoscopes. She never anticipated the sleepless nights, grueling exams, and endless labs. And she certainly never knew that her medical school earned the nickname Dead Med thanks to the tragic history of students overdosing on illegal drugs. But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

Love the story, love that Stephen King read it, but still hate the language!
Love this story. Stephen King is awesome reading this to the audience. I love his writing and always have. But I’ve always disliked his gratuitous use of vulgar language. His writing is beautiful on its own, there’s absolutely no use for the “rude” language as he calls it. Just wish he wouldn’t use it at all, but that’s me & not everyone thinks this way. Good story, great start and middle, and disturbing ending. Kind of like the two sentence story we had to read and analyze in English Lit class…never truly know what happens to LuLuBelle and never will.

If your trying out his writting and just want to see how he writes and are new to his work then this is a really great read! Also if you have a dog or a cat or know people who do this bring a funny new idea into light! I was pointed to this book by a friend after she said this is what made her start to read some of his works! Its a story that will have you luaghing but the ending is kinda strange! I love this book and being a young writter myself to be I honor this work! Its something that is really quite shocking for the Father of Horror!

A short story as read by the author
Stephen King, in this live reading, tells the audience that this started out to be a funny story... but then, as much of his work does, it drifts into something else. Something more in King's wheelhouse. No, it's not straight up horror, nor is it straight up comedy. It's both, and neither, occupying that unsettling middle ground. Is that bad? Not at all. Is it good? I found it a pleasant listen. In the end, we see that King is, despite his detractors, a fine artist, masterful in using them to convey strong emotions with, seemingly no effort. The man can write.
Now for the rundown...
profanity? Some.... not excessive in my opinion
sex? Only discussed, if somewhat graphically.
violence? Implied and an aftermath of some is discussed.
Recommendation? For Stephen King fans, a definite buy.
For straight up horror fans, probably a pass
For someone looking for a short but interesting story with some light and dark moments, yes... this is a good fit.
Note: At this time, this story is not available in print, either in physical or electronic forms, to my knowledge.

Wickedly Funny
I bought this book because I thought it would be just what I needed to fall to sleep to. Not a good idea! The first part of the book was so funny, I had to stiffle my laughter to keep from waking my husband. Pet owners will love it. And in spite of the humor, Stephen King delivers his usual magic by warping the story into weirdness by the end.
