About this listen

Newly married Frances Hazelton, formerly the Countess of Harleigh, should be planning her honeymoon. Instead, she’s unmasking a murderer among the upper crust …

With her new husband George busy on a special mission for the British Museum, Frances has taken on an assignment of her own. The dowager Viscountess Wingate needs someone to sponsor her niece, Kate, for presentation to Queen Victoria. Frances—who understands society’s quirks and constraints as only an outsider can—is the perfect candidate.

Kate is charming and intelligent, though perhaps not quite as sheltered as she might first appear. More worrying to Frances is the viscountess’s sudden deterioration. The usually formidable dowager has become shockingly frail, and Frances suspects someone may be drugging her. The spotlight falls on Kate, who stands to inherit if her aunt passes, yet there are plenty of other likely candidates within the dowager’s household, both above and below stairs.

Joining forces with her beloved George, Frances comes to believe that the late viscount, too, was targeted. And with the dowager seeming to be in greater danger every day, they must flush out the villain before she follows in her husband’s footsteps, directly to the grave …

Pleasant read, but...

I didn't like that there seemed to not be any clues until the end to help piece together who did it.

Bit weaker than the others, still enjoyable

This story was a little slower and flatter than the previous books in the series. Most of it took place inside one room in a house. Almost *too* cozy, lol.

Enjoyabe.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. The writing was great. Even though ti's was a little long, it held NY interest. I enjoyed trying g to figure out who the killer(s) was. The performance was also great.

Great story and narration.

Ms. Freeman delivers a great story which has been well researched and continues to develop the main protagonist France and the supporting characters. It was rare to feel and understand how society worked then.

The narrator Sarah Zimmerman does an amazing job. When I read any of the books now, it is Sarah's voice I hear.

This is a wonderful cozy series. If you are looking for something new, this series will not disappoint.

MUST READ SERIES!

This is without a doubt one of the best series I’ve ever read. I will be rereading them often!! I sure hope the author continues on this journey. It’s such a wonderful world to escape to.

Oh, the tangled web we weave

A house full of suspects and deceptions made for an entertaining mystery. It was disappointing how little George was around, particularly given their newlywed status, but otherwise, I had a great time listening.
