About this listen

The lives of Miss Adela Quested and those around her are forever changed when she befriends a young doctor named Aziz during a trip she and her companion Mrs. Moore make to India. The unlikely friendship between Adela and Aziz eventually culminates in a disastrous expedition to the Marabar caves, during which she offends him, an action which leads to false accusations, arrests, and a litany of miscommunications. Set against the backdrop of the British Raj and the Indian independence movement in the 1920s, this classic novel explores the difficulties that arise from class differences and cultural misunderstandings as well as the impact our actions have on others.

Narration was cartoonish.

Sometimes a good character actor works for narration but I found this narrator unbearable.
It killed it for me. I did not finish the book.

The Impact of British Colonialism

Forster artfully uses symbols and motifs to illustrate the contrast and clash between cultures and the moments in which unity may be achieved. He illustrates the arrogance of a colonizer and the fighting spirit of those colonized.

Confusing at Times

Although I love this story, there is much one needs to know about the Hindu/Muslim culture prior to being able to understand the nuances imbedded within this great story. I have a BA in History and should be able to navigate this book, but I found that there was much that was opaque to me, this diminishing my understanding. This particular issue of PTI was well performed and the sound was pure; so if you want to read this great book, choose this edition. The most popular on Audible has sound issues.

Great Performance!

The story was kind of weak, imho. But the performance was outstanding! The male narrator's female voices were so believable I honestly thought there was also a female narrator for the female characters.

Excellence

This great novel about the injustices and stresses in Indian society at the time of British rule is so beautifully written, and insightful, providing critiques of western racism that remain as valuable today as when this classic was written. The narrator did not bother me although I do not think he added all that much.

While it helped me understand Indian culture and communication. Overall it just was not a meaningful story. I loved the speaker.
