About this listen

Robert Harlan has three loves: his wife, his daughter, and his writing. But when his thirst for success causes him to lose focus on his happy family life, ambition begins to consume him. When a stranger appears with a mysterious message about the brevity of his future, he discovers the truth about himself: who he has become, what he has lost, and what it will take to find love again.

Critic reviews

“The inevitable twist is clever, the writing throughout assured, the sentiment unapologetic and the author confident that he knows just what his readers want and that he’s the man to give it to them.” (Publishers Weekly)

“He gives readers everyman, feel-good stories.” (Omaha World Herald)

Nice listen

This was a nice book. The author had a way of telling the story in a way that makes the reader consider his own life and choices and treatment of others.

Twisty ending

Likes- characters were rich and lovable and funny. Story has meaning for all of us.
Dislikes - took a bit to get into. I stopped listening several times but glad I stuck with it.

Another must read

I love to read a book that does not slam you in the head with filth, vile language and depression. Just a joy to read. It is intelligent and very interesting throughout!

Loved the book and especially the message

It wasn't a roller coaster ride or a build up to a big moment....it was great throughout. It held my attention consistently and had a beautiful message about life and those apart of it who you love. Definitely worth the read!!

Another Great Book by this author

Richard Paul Evans really has a way of making you reflect on your own life and priorities. As is typical of his books, the characters were easy to relate to and become emotionally invested in their perspectives and outcomes. Also great narration. ~ JTC ~

Not His Best

This is the first 4 rating I’ve given to Richard Paul Evans. The storyline was a bit too unbelievable and it lacked the normal draw that keeps one gripped to the events of the story.

Willingness to forgive

It was a good listen and enjoyable storyline with loving characters. Forgiveness is a powerful decision.

Enjoyable, light listen with strong family focus.

The story was interesting but not stellar. A family man is fired from a lackluster job and struggles with financial troubles and challenging physical labor jobs to make ends meet. He hits the bigtime due to the release of his first book yet many difficulties ensue as he balances success and family commitments. I appreciated the strong yet graceful wife who adds a dose of reality and love to his life as he fumbles through career advances. The story gets a bit hokey as a "wise death angel" element is introduced yet it did make sense in the context of the overall story. It's a nice Sunday afternoon listen but nothing earth shattering. Fans of Evans will enjoy this inspirational book and I will try a few of his other selections.
