About this listen

We Can Bury the Past, But It Never Really Dies

Dear Listener,

I am often asked where my stories come from. I'm not always sure. Sometimes a story just comes to me in waves (or trickles) of inspiration and oftentimes it's not until the very end of the book that I see where my characters are taking me. This is such a tale.

Grace is the story of a young runaway girl and the boy who hides her from a frightening world too large and unfathomable for him to comprehend. It is also about two brothers and the love that binds them together through difficult times.

In some ways this is the most autobiographical of all my novels. When I was eight years old my father lost his job, and we sold our home in beautiful and aptly named Arcadia, California, to move to a poor neighborhood in Utah and into a rundown home like the one I describe in the story. I have no fond memories of that time. Not one. I wanted to go home.

I've found my home now, and it has nothing to do with the place where I live, and everything to do with the family I love.

Sincerely,

Richard Paul Evans

Such a great book

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I’m so glad I downloaded it. This book has such heart. Young love, tragedy, abuse and loss. Grace was a shining light even if she didn’t see it. Erick was her knight in shining armor and she made such an impact on his life. It’s a story of how one life can touch so many in so many ways.

I highly recommend this book and I will be reading others by this author for sure.

Incredibly real!

This book hits the heart of painful stories, not mincing words or apologizing. Just hard core emotions that paint beauty among ashes, words that show from the ugliest this world has to offer, healing and hope can bring inspiration and change. Thank you for this book Richard Paul Evans, as a child advocate this is one of my favorites of yours.

Very heartbreaking story

I’ve read a few of Evans’ books and series, but none of them were like this. That ending was almost to tragic, it was very difficult to listen to. I almost burst into tears and I felt all the emotions that the main character felt.

I guess if there is one thing I learned from this, it’s always be prepared for a worst case scenario. Because when things go south, you need to act quickly and with precision.

Richard Paul Evans is my favorite author

Would you consider the audio edition of Grace to be better than the print version?

I read and listened to the book simultaneously, so it was the best of both worlds.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eric first and foremost because the story is from his perspective, and of course Grace herself because the story is about her.

What does John Dossett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The audible version to me, brings the story to life. I gave the performance 4 stars instead of 5 because I occasionally couldn't tell which character was talking sometimes. But overall I found the whole experience to be pretty awesome, which is usually the case with a RPE book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried like a baby at the end of the book. I mean, I actually feel to my knees and wept. And it wasn't what you would have expected that caused my reaction. It was because of Eric's conversation as a child with his sunday school teacher and her response back to him when he answered her question about what he would have done if he had been at Calvary?

Any additional comments?

RPE has such a gift. His words always seem to touch my heart in a way like no other author could do. For that I am grateful.

My husband and I were able to go on "The Walk" cruise in June 2014 to celebrate Alan Christoffersen's arrival to Key West with Richard and his family as well as at least 500 other "The Walk" cruiser's. We also met Kailamai Hansen who was a real live character in "The Walk series. She wrote a book "Out of the Darkness", so if you enjoyed reading this book "Grace", you will like reading her book.

Enjoyable Listen

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I actually saw that author discussing the book on TV, and thought it sounded interesting, even though I had never read or listened to his books before. This type of book was a considerable diversion from what I normally listen to, but it was very well done. And the reader was excellent. The story and the reading really evoked an emotional response.
