About this listen

A broken man. A twist of fate. A second chance. From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Mistletoe Promise and The Walk comes the first novel in a riveting new trilogy that explores the tantalizing question: What if you could start over?

Chicago celebrity Charles James can't shake the nightmare that wakes him each night. He sees himself walking down a long, broken highway, the sides of which are lit in flames. Where is he going? Why is he walking? What is the wailing he hears around him?

By day he wonders why he's so haunted and unhappy when he has all he ever wanted - fame, fans, and fortune and the lavish lifestyle it affords him. Coming from a childhood of poverty and pain, this is what he's dreamed of. But now, at the pinnacle of his career, he's started to wonder if he's wanted the wrong things. His wealth has come legally but questionably, from the power of his personality, seducing people out of their hard-earned money. When he learns that one of his customers has committed suicide because of financial ruin, Charles is shaken. The cracks in his facade start to break down, spurring him to question everything: his choices, his relationships, his future, and the type of man he's become.

Then a twist of fate changes everything. Charles is granted something very remarkable: a second chance. The question is: What will he do with it?

The Broken Road is the first book in a much-anticipated new trilogy by beloved storyteller Richard Paul Evans. It is an engrossing, contemplative story of redemption and grace and the power of second chances. It is an epic journey you won't soon forget.

Another great book!

Another great book from this author. I read the Michael Vey series so I decided to try another one of his books. This first book was really well written and documented Charles’ story really well! Looking forward to number two!

Thoughtful writing

The vulnerability of the protagonist makes the novel more poignantly reflective. The author will have you taking inventory of your life.

Pleasantly surprised

Starts slow but hang in there and it will make sense. Great start to a series.

Excellent story this author.

Having listened to The Walk series by Richard Paul Evens a few years ago as an audible audio book I was not sure what to expect. Would this series be just as good? What I loved about the walk series was how each book was a story in itself and yet connected to the next book. So far this first book had the same power to be a compelling and engaging story unto itself and yet it leaves me wanting to listen to his next book in this series. I appreciated his explanation at the beginning of this book describing how this story came to be. Highly recommend listening!!!

A lot to learn and think about.

I loved the story in this book and I loved that Richard himself narrated it! Everyone should read this book and learn a lesson about not allowing money and fame to cause the loss of what's important in life. Joyce Williams

Surprising

Unsure exactly what I expected, The Broken Road delivered a nice surprise. Read with an unassuming, matter-of-fact delivery, the tone was reminiscent of a 40's gumshoe narrative without the melodrama. The story started slow, but built intrigue with every chapter while the main character morphed from an unethical, ruthless, corporate shyster obsessed with his own skewed image of the America dream, to a vulnerable, flawed man, eking out a home in my heart with each word. A morality play at its best, it unashamedly called out greed and guilt for the corrosive cancers they are. Well done, Mr. Evans; well done. My first novel by this author and my first audiobook ever, I will be back for more of each.
