About this listen

When cops turn on each other, who can you trust?

Florida homicide detective Maggie Novak should be celebrating: it’s the start of a new year, and her boyfriend has just proposed. But all she can think about is the alarming news she received earlier that evening - her teammate Detective Clayton Young is missing.

With few leads, Maggie heads to the supermarket where Clay was last seen. To her horror, security footage reveals a devastating scene in the parking lot: her colleague has died in fearful circumstances. As the investigation begins, Homicide Squad is rocked by the news that Clay might not be the only intended target, and that any one of them could be next on the killer’s agenda.

Clay’s partner, Detective Andy Stucker, is refusing to answer calls, and Maggie suspects he has a part to play in their colleague’s death. Scanning through Clay’s phone, she finds a message to Stucker with the words “they know.”

Who are “they”? And what do they know? As more secrets come to light, Maggie has good reason to believe the killer is just getting started. She needs to uncover the truth fast. But is it already right in front of her eyes?

Loved it!

I loved this one so much! It kept me guessing and while I try to guess the endings of these types of book, I was surprised! So good.

I loved the narrator, her male and kid voices didn't annoy me, and her performance was great! Audio quality was good, didn't hear any background noises. Love the narration.

Excellent thriller - Free with Kindle Unlimited!

While at a New Year’s Eve party with her soon to be fiancé, Detective Maggie Novak gets a call from a colleague’s wife. Her husband is missing. The following morning his body is found. Looks like a suicide. It doesn’t take long and then it looks like maybe it might be a homicide. The scene is so perfect the perpetrator has to know about forensics. Novak’s life is threatened more then once and with multiple red herrings she’s not sure who she can trust. I know I was kept guessing in this fast paced thriller.

This is the second book in the Maggie Novak series. This can be listened to as a stand alone. I really liked the first book also and suggest listening to both.
Keith Houghton has written quite few very good books including the Gabe Quinn series which is excellent! I would love to see more in that series as well.
Karen Peakes does a wonderful job narrating.
This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Good story, good characters and good narrator

I truly enjoyed this book, particularly the characters. The protagonist, Maggie, is a great cop but a little too dedicated to her job sometimes. Her love interest, Steve, is also very likable, even though he is maybe too understanding sometimes. The mystery stays a mystery to the end. The mystery was: Who is killing, or trying to kill, detectives from the Sheriff's office in Orlando, Fla. The first murder was of Detective Floyd. He was initially believed to have committed suicide, but Maggie became skeptical of that theory. I was totally surprised by the ending. This is a real thriller, plus police procedural, novel.

A Place Called Fear is well written and the narrator is excellent. Karen Peakes is able to do male and female voices without the listener being jarred by fake sounding accents. She is dramatic where called for and calm when the situation demands. I listened almost straight through without stopping, but then I had to sleep a little. Started the story immediately upon waking.

Blew it at the end

I’m new to this character series and this is the 2nd book. I was enjoying the book until the end...it fell completely apart due to a super duper flimsy premise for the actions of the protagonist of the story...this was a huge let down and I’m not sure I’d read another. To the author...it has to make some sense and this did not remotely cross the finish line as a good story with characters that did things that made sense or had reasonable motivation. This was non-sense....bad form!

Good Police Procedural

I really Like the Maggie Novak series, the stories are good and consistent. I enjoy that they take place in Florida and in the area where I live. For the most part the narration is really good, with one glaring mistake, that was like fingers on a chalk board. Titusville, Merritt Island, and other Indian River areas mentioned are in Brevard County not Breverd County. I'm sure Mr Houghton spells it correctly in the print book, at least I hope so, Breverd is the only way I can figure to spell out the pronunciation of Ms. Peakes, I hope before she narrates the next book she learns how to pronounce it correctly.
