About this listen

Ralph Delchard, a soldier who fought at the Battle of Hastings, and Gervase Bret, a talented lawyer, have been commissioned by William the Conqueror to look into irregularities brought to light during the compilation of the Domesday Book. Their investigations take them throughout the kingdom, but the pair often find themselves embroiled in more sinister mysteries in the towns they visit.

The king’s work is a dangerous business. A man’s body is found mutilated in Savernake Forest and the residents of Bedwyn sleep uneasy at night, fearing a monster stalking the town. When Ralph Delchard and Gervase Bret arrive, they discover that the locals are harbouring dark secrets and that the real killer may be a little closer to home....

Good Story Marred by Loud, Melodramatic Narrator

I like this genre, and it held a lot of promise in the first few chapters. But just as I was beginning to get involved in the characters and plot, the histrionic over-the-top narrator ruined the story with far too much yelling and over-acting. I would try other books by this author with a different narrator.

Starts slow but worth it in the end

I wasn't sure that this was going to be for me. The story was slow starting ( a lot of time spent introducing characters and setting the scene ) and the narrator seemed a bit over-the- top. I'm glad I stick it out though. The story developed well and the conclusion was plausible. The narrator kind of 'grew' on me though was still a bit jarring when reading certain characters but over all, a good listen.

Good series, I didn’t figure out “who dun it” until revealed.

David Thorpe is marvelous. He is Gervase. I found this series because of other books he narrates.
