About this listen

Within a dying star system, a soldier for hire searches for a missing refugee ship and uncovers a universe-shattering secret.

Orphan, refugee, and soldier-for-hire Asala Sikou doesn't think too much about the end of civilization. Her system's star is dying, and the only person she can afford to look out for is herself.

When a ship called the Vela vanishes during what was supposed to be a flashy rescue mission, a reluctant Asala is hired to team up with Niko, the child of a wealthy inner planet's president, to find it and the outer-system refugees on board.

But this is no ordinary rescue mission; the Vela holds a secret that places the fate of the universe in the balance, and forces Asala to decide—in a dying world where good and evil are far from black and white, who deserves to survive?

loved the narrator and the collaborative writing. Becky chambers is my go to for sci fi

The sound FX are mastered so high that they overwhelm the narrator’s voice regularly. If you dislike full production books or have even mild audio processing issues this is not the audiobook for you. Wish there was a simple reading version available as the collaborative writing is interesting.

Sound FX 👎

Before I started listening to this book, I saw the one star review. However, I have read work by Soon Ha Lee, Becky Chambers, and River Solomon. They have never disappointed and always intrigued me. This book does what all good sci-fi does. It tells the story of today’s reality from a lens people might better accept it, understand it, and with hope, act. The sound effects are ok but maybe not the best selling point. Robin Miles does an amazing job. This book is well worth your time and money.

This is exactly what Science Fiction. Should be

The effort to upgrade the narration with background noises was a bad way to go.

Special effects...NOT
