About this listen

A New York Times bestseller and Amazon Charts Most Read and Most Sold book.

A Goodreads Choice Award nominee for Memoir & Autobiography.

The harrowing true story of one man’s life in - and subsequent escape from - North Korea, one of the world’s most brutal totalitarian regimes.

Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

In this memoir translated from the original Japanese, Ishikawa candidly recounts his tumultuous upbringing and the brutal thirty-six years he spent living under a crushing totalitarian regime, as well as the challenges he faced repatriating to Japan after barely escaping North Korea with his life. A River in Darkness is not only a shocking portrait of life inside the country but a testament to the dignity - and indomitable nature - of the human spirit.

His story is a reminder of why we must defend our democracy. Every election is one vote to protect what we have or lose a little freedom

I found it hard to stop listening to this unimaginable, heartbreaking life story, realizing how much more suffering is taking place still.

amazing story of human endurance

This book was nothing like I expected. I have read a lot about living in PRK, and this was pretty consistent with all of that. But it was a story about a real person who had lived in Japan before moving to North Korea so he had a point of reference from which to measure the misery. It was sad from beginning to end, but not the sad that makes you miserable. It makes you feel blessed every day to live in the USA (or anywhere but North Korea). It made me wish I could help the people of that country. I wish there were more books like this one about North Korea and other places on earth that are miserable.

Wow

Well written and riveting story of the current state of the world and both how this regime functions and how willing the world is to repeatedly turn a blind eye in the name of selfish interests.

Amazing heartbreaking story of current realities.

Great Book

Sad, horrifying account of lives being lived to this day. Circumstances that we don’t even realize are happening outside of our own sheltered world. Little inconveniences and disagreements are put into perspective.

An eye opener

A River in Darkness is a beautifully written story that is at once tragic and hopeful. It flows so smoothly thanks to an excellent translator. The author's experience of living and escaping from North Korea provides a look at life under a brutal regime that provides none of opportunities promised by propagandists luring the unwary to into a life filled with desperation and desperation. The gifted narrator was part of the magic of this book.
