Publisher's summary

William Law’s classic book, A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life was a clarion call to action; to live a life worthy of one’s calling. “Devotion signifies a life given, or devoted to God.” The writings of William Law were challenging in the 18th century. Generations later the message is even more instructive and necessary.

A challenge to our present culture

William Law's, "A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life", is a challenge to our present culture. This is a truly amazing book. I've never heard the arguments for a Christian life presented so comprehensively and clearly. It is a no nonsesne call to spiritual formation. Some of Law's terms are dated and difficult to accept and understand in our present culture because of the change in the meaning and connotation of words and changes in social attitudes. However, the basic arguments are powerful and encouraging to take seriously that which we have lost the vision to take seriously. Law was willing to face things as they are and take his faith very seriously. That's something that few in our culture have the stomach for. It is a call to return to something we have lost.
I've been reading spiritual transformation books for the past year, and this book makes all that I've read so far of the contemporary spiritual transformation books seem like froth in an overly shaken milkshake, mostly air bubbles and little milk. Law’s book is amazingly and incomparably solid in content, seriousness and earnestness. Definitely worth reading by present day disciples.

A Serious Call Indeed

As great as this book is, he to me is a hypocrite. He preached and instructed all this doctrine and judged people for the littlest offense, yet he turned towards pagan mysticism towards the end of his life. In my opinion he lost all credibility. I don't know how he could have expected to be told by the LORD, "Well done good and faithful servant." ( Matthew 25:23.) I'm not judging him, just confused as how such a man who was so godly could do such a turn about.

Couldn't finish

I just couldn't get past the Old King James language. I'll have to get the message in another format.
