About this listen

London, 1880. Kat Holloway, highly sought-after young cook to the wealthy of London, finds herself embroiled in murder when she’s accused of poisoning her employer, the loathsome Sir Lionel Leigh-Bradbury. Her only help as she works to clear her name comes from the mysterious Daniel McAdam, a handsome man-of-all-work who seems to know everyone and always happens to be in the right place at the right time.

Kat and Daniel investigate the crime, but the mystery of Daniel’s background might be just as elusive and dangerous as the poisoner bent on framing Kat for murder.

I love this series. The narrator is terrific. Who is Daniel (sad I already know since I read the other books first). Kat is spunky and yet gracious. I can’t wait for the next (5th?) book. Please say there will be more.

Great! But this is book one!

Great plot, entertaining twists and turns, with cooking, murder, poison, and romantic tension. Looking forward to the next book. Good narration. She acts the character, does not just read the story.

great story

This was a lovely novella. I enjoyed the characters of Kat Holloway and Daniel McAdams. James is cute too. Terrific narration.

Short but sweet!

The writing and storytelling were both excellent. I was hooked from the beginning. The romance thread with Daniel was also captivating.

Excellent!

This is the start of a very engaging and enjoyable series, the author knows how to tell a good story. I've read them in order, and since the relationships progress, I'd recommend starting with this one.

That said, these books require some serious suspension of disbelief, in addition to the willingness to accept that they are not true to the Victorian era. Contemporary values, sensibilities, and social issues are presented in a Victorian setting, and the protagonist, who is a cook for a large household, must be either bionic or able to time travel, as she is able to whip up sumptuous, multi-course meals for large groups in only a couple of hours, leaving her free for her investigations.

I found the characters likeable, the romance light-handed, and a pleasing absence of grit, gore, melodrama, and political opinion. Really good light reading.

Surprised at how much I enjoyed this series

This book is only 2 hrs long and the pre-quel to her Kat Holloway series. It was OK, but it was not worth the credit to purchase.

This was a very bad idea that what?...the publisher made Ms Ashley do it? Readers want their money’s worth. If it were a GREAT story but it’s not. I knew it was two hrs so I waited and had some cheap credit to just use. Turning this back in.

Not worth it!
