About this listen
Soon to be a Netflix animated series!
The New York Times best-selling debut by Adam Gidwitz, the Newbery Honor-winning author of The Inquisitor's Tale.
“A wonderful sense of humor and narrative voice…completely fresh and unique.” (Rick Riordan, number one best-selling author)
Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic Grimm (and Grimm-inspired) fairy tales. An irreverent, witty narrator leads us through encounters with witches, warlocks, dragons, and the devil himself. As the siblings roam a forest brimming with menacing foes, they learn the true story behind the famous tales, as well as how to take charge of their destinies and create their own happily ever after. Because once upon a time, fairy tales were awesome.

Story
It's the summer before middle school, and 11-year-old Bug's best friend, Moira, has decided the two of them need to use the next few months to prepare. For Moira, this means figuring out the right clothes to wear, learning how to put on makeup, and deciding which boys are cuter in their yearbook photos than in real life. But none of this is all that appealing to Bug, who doesn't particularly want to spend more time trying to understand how to be a girl. Besides, there's something more important to worry about.

Amazing narrator. Gruesome
We love the podcast by this author, Grim, Grimmer Grimmest, and really enjoyed this book. It's amazing that he can make such a gruesome story so enjoyable. That being said this is way Grimmer than any of the stories in his podcast. There were times when I kept thinking to myself "I can't believe I'm letting my kids listen to this" and yet he narrates in such a way that it's not scary and it's absolutely entertaining.
Definitely recommend, but with a huge caution for those that are less comfortable with really gory imagery.

Not what I expected, but good.
It was definitely weird. I probably should have expected it to be different, but the story cadence took some getting used to, especially with the way the chapters "ended" the story every time. Solid narration and overall decent.

truly dark and grim but satisfying
there's some pg gore, but the narrator warns you before it happens. I liked the story. It keeps you uneasy till the end, and it ends satisfyingly. It dealt with life lessons without being too serious nor depressing. A good read, but totally not for crazy parents.
