A whimsical and heartwarming novel about a witch who has a second chance to get her magical powers—and her life—back on track, from the national bestselling author of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches.

Sera Swan used to be one of the most powerful witches in Britain. Then she resurrected her great-aunt Jasmine from the (very recently) dead, lost most of her magic, befriended a semi-villainous talking fox, and was exiled from her Guild. Now she (slightly reluctantly and just a bit grumpily) helps Jasmine run an enchanted inn in Lancashire, where she deals with her quirky guests' shenanigans, tries to keep said talking fox in check, and longs for the future that seems lost to her. But then she finds out about an old spell that could hold the key to restoring her power…

Enter Luke Larsen, handsome and icy magical historian, who arrives on a dark winter evening and just might know how to unlock the spell’s secrets. Luke has absolutely no interest in getting involved in the madcap goings-on of the inn and is definitely not about to let a certain bewitching innkeeper past his walls, so no one is more surprised than he is when he agrees to help Sera with her spell. Worse, he might actually be thawing.

Running an inn, reclaiming lost magic, and staying one step ahead of the watchful Guild is a lot for anyone, but Sera Swan is about to discover that she doesn’t have to do it alone...and that the weird, wonderful family she’s made might be the best magic of all.

Critic reviews

“Found family, a talking fox, a quaint inn in an English village—it’s like this book was written just for me. Mandanna somehow writes existential crises like a warm hug.”—The New York Times

"I want to live inside this wonderful book! Every single page is sweet, quirky, charming, and one hundred percent delightful! I absolutely loved it!"—Sarah Beth Durst, New York Times bestselling author of The Spellshop

"This book is pure magic. Warm, cozy, and gentle, fiery, passionate, and angry, joyful, insightful, and hilarious. It’s full of love and heart and emotion, and I adored every moment of it. I so wish I could check into Sera’s inn to hang out with her and Luke and Jasmine and that delightful undead rooster."—Jasmine Guillory, New York Times bestselling author of Flirting Lessons

Honestly, this story probably arrived just as I needed. If you're looking for a story to be as low stakes as Sangu's last book, I'm sorry to say that things are a little more intense. This story is about losing everything and the journey to rise up from where you fell down. In a way, I liked the arc of the main character better in this book than The Secret Society of Irregular Witches. She seemed to have more growth. I will say that what keeps this from being a five star book is that there is a bit of a cut and paste feel to some of the characters. In many ways, that is comforting and if that's what you're looking for then you will love this book. It's most definitely a great book to curl up to next to a fire with a pet and drink some lovely tea. And perhaps a good story to read when you feel the world is against you.

A Slightly more adventurous tale

I adore Mandanna's writing. it's always cozy and wonderful. My only complaint two books in a row now is the very quick ending. it could easily be drawn out a few more chapters or into sequel so it doesn't feel so rushed.

still 100% worth reading

absolutely adore just wish the ending wasn't rushed

I was obsessed with The Very Secret Society and I have been so excited for this one for a year. It started a little slow but it picked up and I was in love. I love how she incorporates sparkling magic, endearing children, love interests, and always a good bit of action. Please just keep giving us more of this world! The narrator is amazing too and brings these books to life - she makes them sparkle.

I love this author! (and reader!)

This book was different from book one, I loved all the sidecharacterss. but the main female lead was a bit sad and a bit depressed at times. I laughed and cried. The narrator read too slowly so I speeded it or I'd fall asleep. Overall I did enjoy this book,

Nice story

This book feels like a really good hug. The way it is written is so comforting. All the characters feel so real and are so different to each other. Love love love it. Also, how diverse it is? And it doesn’t feel fake or forced. Perfection made book.

Overall an inspirational story of self acceptance and accepting life’s lessons, challenges and seeing that what we want is not what we need the most. The narrator was a little hard to get used to bc it sounds like she’s always about to cry. A little laugh at loud funny, a little more sad but that could be bc of the tone of voice of the narrator. May be less so if I’d read with my eyes.

Bittersweet
