About this listen

An unexpected love story from Marc Levy, international bestselling author of The Last of the Stanfields, and the most widely read French author in the world.

It’s been five years since fate upended resilient Chloe Bronstein’s world. While she may be living with her father, and her acting career has taken a decidedly unexpected turn, she’s alive. And she’s intrigued by Sanji, the charming new elevator operator in her quaint Manhattan apartment building. There’s just something about the Mumbai-born, Oxford-educated, thoroughly modern elevator man that doesn’t quite add up.

Sanji is dazzled by Chloe. They have so much in common: Both defiant. Both independent. Both determined to live by their own rules. But there’s one thing about Sanji that Chloe doesn’t know. Yet.

However hesitant Chloe and Sanji’s burgeoning romance is - complicated by family, friends, neighbors, and the past - it also awakens them to life’s limitless possibilities.

The story was great, the narrator's outstanding, and the characters were fascinating. The theme of family is very thought provoking. I loved it.

A different kind of book, this novel manages to captivate by defying one set of genre rules. It's a love story, with several stories of romance developed, across generations. There's character development, with interesting personal challenges posed to the characters that call into question a reader's own prejudices and values. A mystery intrigues as a meta-whodunit unfolds. And the narrator throughout voices plot and dialogue with the conviction of a gifted actor. Very worthwhile.

A mystery, a love story, and a character tale

Ignore the political comments about Fox News. The story is well written & most folks will enjoy it.

Left wing but cute

To say this story is unusual and engaging doesn't come up to the level of surprise you experience. Can you even remember being in an elevator that needed an operator? I had that job in the '60s in a four-story department store. lol. Tension between cultures, economic classes and those with mobility impairments are mixed with romance and some rather innocent misunderstandings.

As a former elevator operator...

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel as a testament to love, endurance, and strength of the human condition. The narration was fantastic and made all the difference over reading. It was humorous, sad, and the characters were very real. At times I felt a strong resemblance to a Frederick Bachman novel. The story would have rated 5 stars had the author left out his efforts to express his own political views. For this reader, it ruined an otherwise lovely and heartwarming story.

Pleasantly Surprised

It wasn’t what I expected, kept my interest. A fun read. I liked hearing about how living in an apartment building was like living in a small town
