Publisher's summary

This program is read by Noah Galvin, who starred in Dear Evan Hansen, The Real O'Neals, and Booksmart.

"A Star is Bored is an absolute knockout. Riotously funny and wickedly tender." (Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times best-selling author of Daisy Jones and the Six)

People Magazine Best Book of Summer 2020 - Named a Must-Read Summer book by Town & Country - Named One of the 14 Best Books of Summer 2020 by Harper's Bazaar - One of Library Journal's 2020 "Titles to Watch" - One of the 30 Best Beach Reads According to Parade Magazine

The Devil Wears Prada meets Postcards from the Edge in a hilariously heartfelt novel influenced in part by the author’s time assisting Carrie Fisher.

Charlie Besson is tense and sweating as he prepares for an insane job interview. His car is idling, like his life, outside the Hollywood mansion of Kathi Kannon. The Kathi Kannon, star of stage and screen and People Magazine’s worst dressed list. She needs an assistant. He needs a hero.

Kathi is an icon, best-selling author, and an award winning actress, most known for her role as Priestess Talara in a blockbuster sci-fi film. She’s also known in another role: crazy. Admittedly so. Famously so. Fabulously so, as Charlie quickly discovers.

Their three-year odyssey is filled with late-night shopping sprees, last-minute trips to see the aurora borealis, and an initiation to that most sacred of Hollywood tribes: the personal assistant. But Kathi becomes much more than a boss, and as their friendship grows, Charlie must make a choice. Will he always be on the sidelines of life, assisting the great forces that be, or can he step into his own leading role?

Laugh-out-loud funny and searingly poignant, Byron Lane's A Star Is Bored is a novel that, like the star at its center, is enchanting and joyous, heartbreaking, and hopeful.

A magical world

Byron Lane has created a silly, odd, glorious and beautiful piece of art we are all lucky enough to get to share in. I laughed out loud. I sobbed. I reflected. And I feel like I got to share in something very special, even if it is a fiction. Such a gift.

Hilarious, Poignant and Pitch Perfect!

This book does not disappoint. It is both what I expected and so much more. The amazing insider perspective on the strange, hilarious and often heartbreaking aspects of living in LA. The delightful surprise was how personal and raw the book was. It’s not clear how much is real or fictionalized but it doesn’t matter. Byron writes with such honesty about his fears, insecurities, joys and revelations that it all rings true as beautifully read Noah Gavin. Bravo!

Hard to listen to knowing how it ended in real life

Great book, I loved her writing, first book of hers I read was “Delusions of Grandma” about 30 years ago and I was hooked. I then saw her as a writer instead of an actress. One of my pet peeves is she did abridged audiobooks. Thank for the insight. Tone of book felt a cross between Carrie and David Sedaris. I loved it, thank you

Touching and entertaining!

I saw Byron Lane's play (Tilda Swinton Answers an Ad on Craigslist) in NYC several years ago and was an instant fan. Based on his play (so much deeper and more affecting than the title might suggest), I was so excited to listen to this book when it was announced. It exceeded my high expectations. I wanted to devour it, but made myself slow the pace. I JUST finished it, and was so moved I had to write a review. Charlie's journey and growth is something so many people can identify with. "****ring" will forever hold so much more meaning for me.

Extremely good. Recommend and then some.

Thus author personal note thanks so many writers he’s known along the way, and credits what he’s learned from them.
(Including the most famous of them.)

But this writer has plenty of his own original genius to share, whatever he gained along the way from others.

The book is such a gorgeous and generous combination of storytelling, characters become real, and sweet delicacy.

I stumbled across this book and thought it might be entertaining. I completely underestimated what I would find.

To the author: I think I now must read more of you.
And thank you for this work.

Love,love,loved this book

I loved everything about book. It made me laugh and it made me cry. It was so eloquently written. Even parts that might make one blush were beautiful. I loved envisioning the characters grow. I felt like I was a part of the journey. I would be remiss if i didn’t mention the narration. It was perfect. I will recommend it to others and I will definitely listen to it again. This one will become a part of my favorites list. I live, love, loved this book!
