About this listen

A young girl discovers a portal to a land filled with centaurs and unicorns in Seanan McGuire's Across the Green Grass Fields, a stand-alone tale in the Hugo and Nebula Award-wining Wayward Children series.

"Welcome to the Hooflands. We're happy to have you, even if you being here means something's coming."

Regan loves, and is loved, though her school-friend situation has become complicated, of late.

When she suddenly finds herself thrust through a doorway that asks her to "Be Sure" before swallowing her whole, Regan must learn to live in a world filled with centaurs, kelpies, and other magical equines - a world that expects its human visitors to step up and be heroes.

But after embracing her time with the herd, Regan discovers that not all forms of heroism are equal, and not all quests are as they seem....

A stand-alone Wayward Children story containing all-new characters, and a great jumping-on point for new listeners.

Great stories

These stories are so great! I love how different they are and yet so similar in characterization. Great questions of acceptance, change, destiny, etc. big questions even adults struggle to consider.

Great story; stands alone well

Seanan McGuire has an unusually deft hand in remembering with precision the exact painful, bright contours of childhood. While I’m fairly different from the protagonist in other respects, I felt the first few chapters of girlhood restrictions in a school lorded over by a queen bee in my soul. I’ve really enjoyed all the Wayward Children books, but this one in particular stands on its own just fine. My son and I were listening to the audiobook together and it was an exercise in self discipline not to cheat and listen ahead after his bedtime. Strongly recommend.

Much different than expected.

I love McGuire's Wayward series but this one lacked everything about them that keeps me eager for the next one. I definitely enjoyed the land of unicorns, centaurs and such but where was the magic? Well, it was just a different kind of magic; this little girl's power was HER!!! Sadly though, I nearly gave up on it at least twice due to the less than par performance. She was tolerable except where I think it REALLY counts... The "Bullwinkle" voice and slaughter of every other magical creature beyond the door were simply awful. Because of the reader I'm very glad this title was included with my membership and not a credit spent.

A great stand alone book!

Across the Green Grass Fields
Wayward Children
By: Seanan McGuire

This was a stand alone book. It has a gal named Rogan that is a little different, slower to get her puberty. She ends up making the mistake of telling her "friend" who freaks out. Rogan leaves school early and runs, she's finds a door that takes her to a world where she is again different but in a good way.

This world has unicorns, venture, gains, kelpies, and more. A human is heralded as something great. She is to go see the Queen. But the Queen wants her dead or alive. Rogan is thought to be someone who will be a hero.

The characters are amazing! The world building is awesome! This book is truly spectacular! Who wouldn't want to live with centaurs and have a herd of unicorns? Great ending too!

Whispers Are Not Comfy

A lot of the narrator's voices were hushed, whispers even when the description of the voice was opposite.

I will say, this story is one of my favorites in the series. It brings me renewed hope for the next books! Such a bitter ending, it leaves me heartbroken and far too empathetic.

I've been devouring these novellas lately. Just wish the narrators were more consistent and stayed true to the written characters.
