About this listen

Dan Sheehan is a third-generation military flyer. He was eager to test his skills as a Cobra gunship pilot in the theatre of combat - and then he got his chance, first, in East Timor, then during two tours of duty in Iraq.

The scenes in Dan's military memoir crackle with tension and excitement as we follow his path into battle. Bullets pierce their Cobras as Dan and his buddies struggle to separate enemy fighters from civilian - ultimately deciding who lives and dies. Through blinding sandstorms, the smoke of battle and chaos of low-altitude firefights at night, Dan puts us in the front seat of the Cobra - where we white-knuckle our way through barrages of enemy fire - and into his head as he makes split-second decisions that carry lasting consequences.

But there is far more to Sheehan's story than this - an important reason why he wants us to understand what military men and women experience on the front lines of war. And what they bring home.

After the adrenaline rush of combat, something inside Dan would not turn off. He was a warrior, willing and proud to serve his country and he was fortunate to come out of battle whole, time and again. But he had not escaped Iraq untouched.

A Must Read for All Combat Families

An absolutely jaw-dropping performance of a uniquely raw recounting of one combat veteran's journey home from the front line. This is a must read for any combat veteran, as well as all those close to them, and anyone who wants to know a bit more about what exactly our service men and women sacrifice both on and off the battlefield.

Warrior and scholar

Sheehan's intelligent prose pulls the reader into a fireside chat with a good friend who has "seen the elephant". As a fellow veteran of Iraq I am proud of the strength of character and moral courage of this warrior to tell it like it is. Well read and well written. Sheehan is exactly the prudent, courageous "bearer of the peace" this country needs. Thanks, from all us grunts for doing what you do. In war and now in peace.

Superb Book, Superb Narration

This Vietnam Veteran Cobra Pilot resonates with this book. The author describes the violence and uncertainty of combat in an attack helicopter and expertly weaves in his personal reaction to that combat that give a unique view of this type of war. Narration is the best I’ve heard. Highly recommended.

Do you want some cheese with that whine

I just couldn’t take it. An endless whining monologue about his terrible feelings! And the horrible language was nearly in every sentence! Someone please take this guy back to the field hospital and keep him there.
