About this listen

New York Times best seller

“Vital reading for Americans and people anywhere who seek to understand what is happening ‘after the fall’ of the global system created by the United States” (New York Journal of Books), from the former White House aide, close confidant to President Barack Obama, and author of The World as It Is

At a time when democracy in the United States is endangered as never before, Ben Rhodes spent years traveling the world to understand why. He visited dozens of countries, meeting with politicians and activists confronting the same nationalism and authoritarianism that are tearing America apart. Along the way, he discusses the growing authoritarianism of Vladimir Putin, and his aggression toward Ukraine, with the foremost opposition leader in Russia, who was subsequently poisoned and imprisoned; he profiled Hong Kong protesters who saw their movement snuffed out by China under Xi Jinping; and America itself reached the precipice of losing democracy before giving itself a fragile second chance.

The characters and issues that Rhodes illuminates paint a picture that shows us where we are today - from Barack Obama to a rising generation of international leaders; from the authoritarian playbook endangering democracy to the flood of disinformation enabling authoritarianism. Ultimately, Rhodes writes personally and powerfully about finding hope in the belief that looking squarely at where America has gone wrong can make clear how essential it is to fight for what America is supposed to be, for our own country and the entire world.

A ‘Must Read’ for persons of conscience and commitment to wellbeing

Compelling narrative from historical and current perspectives. Excellently written. Whatever one’s political perspectives this is an important treatise to understand from where we’ve come, where we are, and where we must go. Read and be challenged to do you part to be an element in solutions and not complicit I problems.

Fascinating, terrifying and hopeful

I have lived/been in other countries and have had the experience of listening to people express how they see the United States and its citizens. I’ve been traumatized with the attitude of the Republican Party that has turned its back on this country and our Constitution. I live on the USA/Mexico border and witness American’s insatiable weakness when it comes to illicit sex, addictive drugs and averise and I compare the rise of the middle class in Mexico to the fall of the middle class in the United States. Is this the fall? This book explains it brilliantly.

Interesting book, but hard to listen to

A fascinating account of pre, during, and post- Obama. I found it hard to listen at times because Ben Rhodes’ attempted accents for his colleagues other world leaders was off putting. Some of the sections are a little long and I found that my mind often wandered onto other thoughts while trying to listen. I think this may be a better read as a traditional book rather than an audio book.

Brilliant work for this time!

This is a book that makes me want to take greater responsibility for being an American. His breakdown of the global forces shaping our world, and how America ultimately misplayed the great hand we were dealt after WW2 is fascinating, but at the same time it is a very hopeful work for what America can be in the world. I hope Americans of all political persuasions can read the last chapter because there are purposeful things we can do that unite us.

Good Book

The subject matter was interesting, though the narration was a little annoying. He has a kid's voice and a tendency to be meticulous in his pronunciation. I also don't care if I ever hear the word hegemony again.
