About this listen

*As featured in the streaming documentary #UNTRUTH—now with a new foreword by George Conway and an afterword by the author*

A masterful and eye-opening examination of Trump and the coercive control tactics he uses to build a fanatical devotion in his supporters written by “an authority on breaking away from cults…an argument that…bears consideration as the next election cycle heats up” (Kirkus Reviews).

Since the 2016 election, Donald Trump’s behavior has become both more disturbing and yet increasingly familiar. He relies on phrases like “fake news” and “build the wall” and continues to spread the divisive mentality of us vs. them. He lies constantly, has no conscience, never admits when he is wrong, and projects all of his shortcomings onto others. He has become more authoritarian, more outrageous, and yet many of his followers remain blindly devoted. Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert and a major Trump supporter, calls him one of the most persuasive people living. His need to squash alternate information and his insistence of constant ego stroking are all characteristics of other famous leaders—cult leaders.

In The Cult of Trump, mind-control and licensed mental-health expert Steven Hassan draws parallels between our current president and people like Jim Jones, David Koresh, Ron Hubbard, and Sun Myung Moon, arguing that this presidency is in many ways like a destructive cult. He specifically details the ways in which people are influenced through an array of social psychology methods and how they become fiercely loyal and obedient. Hassan was a former “Moonie” himself, and he presents a “thoughtful and well-researched analysis of some of the most puzzling aspects of the current presidency, including the remarkable passivity of fellow Republicans [and] the gross pandering of many members of the press” (Thomas G. Gutheil, MD and professor of psychiatry, Harvard Medical School). The Cult of Trump is an accessible and in-depth analysis of the president, showing that under the right circumstances, even sane, rational, well-adjusted people can be persuaded to believe the most outrageous ideas.

“This book is a must for anyone who wants to understand the current political climate.” (Judith Stevens-Long, PhD and author of Living Well, Dying Well)

FIVE STARS!

FIVE STARS!

I was so utterly fascinated by this book, I accidentally drove a half hour past my exit while listening to it on my commute. No joke!

The Cult of Trump is a must read, not only for Hassan's insights into Trump's baffling rise to power, but for the information he provides on mind-control and how it impacts us every day through seemingly innocuous channels. Don't get me wrong: Hassan is, by no means, advancing a conspiracy theory. He applies decades of research on, and personal experience with, destructive and dangerous cult leaders and presents compelling evidence for why Trump qualifies as one.

Even if you support Trump, or plan to vote for him again, this book will open your eyes as to why you do, without necessarily convincing you to do otherwise.

Scary

This book kept me interested and amazed for hours at a time. I remember the horrific story of Jim Jones and his followers. There is an eerie resemblance to those that follow and continue to defend Donald Trump. The author shows a deep understanding of Trumps traits and the potential danger he presents for America.

Enlightening and relevant

This is an enlightening and relevant read for our current political climate. The book sheds new light on cults and Trump. It is a great jumping off point for looking at undue influence in our lives in combating cult like activities from the Trump administration.

Trump 2020 jk

It’s sad because the people who need to listen to this book, probably won’t. Steven Hassan does a beautiful job correlating his B.I.T.E model to Trump’s comments, his behaviors and his arrogant narcissistic attitude. Very informative. Also if you have the time, I’d recommend reading his other book first (combating cult mind control) then coming to listen to this one. It’ll give you a deeper understanding of the material and how Trump uses the same tactics cult leaders use.

excellent points about cults and media influence

I really liked his points about Colts and media influence. the problem is that he is extremely biased. this book could just as easily be called The cult of conservatives, republicans, or the right.
unfortunately, the author chose to use many of the tricks he accuses conservatives of using on his audience when making his case against conservatives.

is information about how to deal with someone with a differing view is excellent, I just wish he could be a more self-aware of his own bias.

Highly recommend

Excellent read! I highly recommend it. Also I agree with that groups that are tax free and habe charity Status but exercise mind control and undue influence need to be stripped of their charity status and that our young ones need to be educated and love and compassion needs to be put in the foreground!

Applying Past Knowledge in a Current Context

Dr Hassan adeptly applies his experience, personal and professional, to the current political situation fostered and even catalyzed by Trump, and how to address it, acutely and for the future.

Buehler. Buehler. Buehler.

Very informative but the authors voice was dry like listening to Ben Stein. Make sure you're awake. Not good for driving.
