Publisher's summary

Little Caribbean, Brooklyn, New York: Lyndsay Murray is opening Spice Isle Bakery with her family, and it’s everything she’s ever wanted. The West Indian bakery is her way to give back to the community she loves, stay connected to her Grenadian roots, and work side-by-side with her family. The only thing getting a rise out of Lyndsay is Claudio Fabrizi, a disgruntled fellow bakery owner who does not want any competition.

On opening day, he comes into the bakery threatening to shut them down. Fed up, Lyndsay takes him to task in front of what seems to be the whole neighborhood. So when Claudio turns up dead a day later—murdered—Lyndsay is unfortunately the prime suspect. To get the scent of suspicion off her and her bakery, she has to prove she’s innocent—under the watchful eyes of her overprotective brother, anxious parents, and meddlesome extended family. What could go wrong?

Great

Very good start to a hopefully long series. I loved how character driven and realistic it was. It was also refreshing to see a protagonist with a loving family and community.

Original and Joyful Fun

I loved following Lindsay's journey of opening her Caribbean bakery. It was so fun to read a cozy that is set in a Brooklyn neighborhood that I am familiar with. And as an immigrant myself, I appreciated and related to Lindsay's multi-generational close-knit (sometimes stiflingly close!), always loving and supportive family. The story was surprisingly fast-moving, suspenseful, and exciting. Lindsay is easy to like and I wanted to champion and cheer for her throughout the book. The narrator does a fantastic job of voicing female, male, old and young characters. A thoroughly enjoyable listen!

A light but interesting mystery

Food, family and culture were interesting. The mentions of the grandmother and her sayings and ways intrigued me.

Enjoyed the Caribbean theme

It was nice listening to a suspense book, featuring Caribbean people. It’s always lovely to see the inclusion!

Spice Isle Bakery Book 1

The story started out fast. It begins with a soft opening of Spice Isle Bakery and a heated confrontation by another baker. The main character, Lyndsay Murray, has opened a bakery with her family. Lyndsay is close with her family. She doesn't make a decision without their input or encouragement. I liked that part of the book a lot. I enjoyed how the family is a constant. There does seem to be a lot of characters but it's not confusing. I can see how they each can progress this series. I want Lyndsay and Granny to be a duo more!
I'm looking forward to book 2.
