About this listen

From best-selling fantasy author Steven Brust comes this paranormal novel of immortality - and its price....

Born over a century ago, Agyar was once a frivolous young man, before he found unwanted immortality in a woman's blood-red lips. Now he goes from woman to woman, and decade to decade, finding himself at last in an Midwestern college town, where he must choose between the seductions of salvation - and of destruction.

Produced at POD studios in Minneapolis, this edition was narrated by the author and features the voice of Kaylynn Raschke.

Struggling to finish it. The main character is so unlikeable. He comes across as a pretentious jerk. He makes fun of everyone and everything while trying to assert his own superiority and coolness. The paranormal aspect takes a back seat to problematic sexual encounters and wonky interpersonal interactions. It's not enjoyable, but not terrible... I feel obligated to finish it. I love this author's other books, so this is doubly disappointing. Though I really appreciate the fact that he tried something new and is branching away from his usual writing themes/style.

Meh.

An excellent novel with a lyrical turn of phrase. The book feels slow to start but draws you in as if you are listening to someone’s unusual diary. It is in turns both grim and romantic with parts feeling like a seduction by the author. There are some minimal sound effects which initially distracted me but in the end I feel they added to the story. It’s the sort of story that makes me want to sit down with the author and ask what inspired them.

I definitely recommend picking up this title.

An unusual vampire tale

Vampires are unapologetically jerks, but Brust still makes one a sympathetic Hero you can root for.

I enjoy the story to an extent. the lack of emotion by the narrator for each character made certain engagements awkward and feel forced.

I really enjoyed this, nothing is over explained and it felt like i was listening to a real recounting of a vampire's tale.
