Publisher's summary
New York Times Best-selling Author of The Diplomat’s Wife
A breathtakingly poignant novel of suspense about a woman who must face a past she’d rather forget in order to uncover a dangerous legacy that threatens her future.
Ten years ago, US State Department intelligence officer Jordan Weiss’s idyllic experience as a graduate student at Cambridge was shattered when her boyfriend Jared drowned in the River Cam. She swore she’d never go back—until a terminally ill friend asks her to return. Jordan attempts to settle into her new life, taking on an urgent mission beside rakish agent Sebastian Hodges. Just when she thinks there’s hope for a fresh start, a former college classmate tells her that Jared’s death was not an accident—he was murdered.
Jordan quickly learns that Jared’s research into World War II had uncovered a shameful secret, but powerful forces with everything to lose will stop at nothing to keep the past buried. Soon, Jordan finds herself in grave peril as she struggles to find the answers that lie treacherously close to home, the truth that threatens to change her life forever, and the love that makes it all worth fighting for. Fast-paced and impossible to pause, Almost Home establishes Pam Jenoff as one of the best new writers in the genre.

It was a misty Wednesday morning. Inside the Gestapo headquarters, you could cut the tension with a knife. There was a traitor in their midst: Someone had leaked a list of the SS to the British press. The head of the Gestapo called me into his office. Panelled oak walls, a grand piano in the corner, rugs lining the floor—the place where he ordered executions every day.

When a body is hauled from the River Tyne, Sarah Tucker heads to Newcastle for a closer look. The protagonist is a mess. She stumbles over herself repeatedly. I hope no one works for the State Department with her credentials. Just a poorly designed/plotted storyline. Has potential but needs several rewrites and an editor who is worth his/her salt!

Interesting Premise, Poor Execution
I like the idea behind this novel, BUT in execution, it falls far short of it's potential.
I did not believe the main character was as smart as she was played out to be, The end is too far flung and important plot points were easily explained away, or just not addressed at all. The number of times she says "I just don't understand" is baffling, the link to WWII is laughable at best, nonexistent at worse. The most interesting plot point is used to set up the sequel, which I don't have the patience to read. This was my first of Pam Jenoffs books, if they're all like this, it'll also be my last.
The Narrator does solid work, she's just got not great material to work with.
