About this listen

Forbidden romance, violence, and the ultimate betrayal. To state that vampires and humans never lived in harmony would be an understatement. With each vampire’s thirst for blood often leading to human casualties, it is no surprise that the two species distanced themselves from one another many moons ago. So long ago, in fact, that today, many humans believe the stories to be folklore. But this didn’t stop Brein from wanting to learn more about humanity and the differences and similarities they shared with vampires.

As the youngest vampire in his family, Brein found himself fascinated with humans from a young age, before embarking on the ultimate journey: to discover what humankind was all about and what vampires could gain from communicating with them. However, even he could not have realized what he was about to discover along the way. It certainly wasn’t his plan to fall in love with a human, after all. Will Brein be able to bring man and vampire together in harmony for the first time ever, or will he be banished and cast out by his elders within the vampire clan?

One thing is for sure: A little forbidden romance always clouds your judgment, no matter if you're a human or vampire.

Not Your Typical Vampire!

Romance and Vampires – who could ask for more? Brein meets Taylor, the woman of his dreams – of course, he’s had a long time to dream – about 700 years give or take. Taylor, like Brein, has issues with sunlight, doesn’t eat much, nor does she sleep much due to a medical condition. A match made in heaven, except Brein, is no angel nor is his family. Taylor is given an opportunity to live forever provided she survives Brein’s family gathering. The true question is, will Brein survive Taylor?

John Murphy, the author, delivers a fresh take on the vampire world. Brein is the equivalent of a spoiled rich kid wanting to do things his way, turning his back on his heritage and family, and making some really bad choices. Murphy allows the listener to the mistakes as they happen, as well as the lessons learned giving Brein a deeper depth to his character. Although this does not guarantee the listener will form a fond connection with Brein. The storyline flows smoothly. The dialogue was realistic and flowed evenly as well.

The narrator, Brian T. Deal, delivers an entertaining performance. He provides a unique sound for each character, subtle but present and noticeable. His delivery is smooth and flawless. He speaks clearly and with the appropriate level of energy.

This is an engaging listen, and one that is short and exciting. Although the ending was a cliffhanger, it was well done.
