Publisher's summary
Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew - just in time for Amy's senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she's always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy's mother's old friend. Amy hasn't seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she's surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she's coming to terms with her father's death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road - diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards - this is the story of one girl's journey to find herself.

Kat and Stevie - best friends, theater kids, polar opposites - have snuck away from the suburbs to spend a night in New York City. They have it all planned out. They’ll see a play, eat at the city’s hottest restaurant, and have the best. Night. Ever. What could go wrong? Well. Kind of a lot? They’re barely off the train before they’re dealing with destroyed phones, family drama, and unexpected Pomeranians. Over the next few hours, they’ll have to grapple with old flames, terrible theater, and unhelpful cab drivers. But there are also cute boys to kiss, parties to crash....

Andie has a plan. And she always sticks to her plan. Future? A top-tier medical school. Dad? Avoid him as much as possible (which isn't that hard considering he's a congressman and he's never around). Friends? Palmer, Bri, and Toby - pretty much the most awesome people on the planet. Who needs anyone else? Relationships? No one's worth more than three weeks. So it's no surprise that Andie's got her summer all planned out, too.

Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris - until she meets Etienne St. Clair: Perfect, Parisian (and English and American, which makes for a swoon-worthy accent), and utterly irresistible. The only problem is that he's taken, and Anna might be, too, if anything comes of her almost-relationship back home.

Hi, my name is Bree Camden, and I’m hopelessly in love with my best friend and star quarterback Nathan Donelson (so is half of America, judging by the tabloids and how much the guy dates). The first step is admitting it, right? Except, I can never admit it to him because he clearly doesn’t see me that way, and the last thing I want is for things to get weird between us. Nothing but good old-fashioned no-touching-the-sexiest-man-alive platonic friendship for us! Everything is exactly how I like it! Yes. Good. (I’m not crying; I’m just peeling an onion.)

Story
Mason has never known his father, but longs to. All he has of him is a DVD of a man whose face is never seen, reading a children’s book. One day, on a whim, he plays the DVD for a group of comatose teens at the nursing home where his mother works. One of them, a beautiful girl, responds. Mason learns she is part of an experiment intended to render teenagers into autotrophs—genetically engineered, self-sustaining life-forms who don’t need food or water to survive.

The narrator saves the day
All I was hoping for was a nice, quick summer reading, however I found myself struggling to make some progress with this book since it was so dull.
Thank heavens I picked this audiobook up and ended up enjoying the story, otherwise I suspect I would have not finished it.

Better as a physical book. Good for high schoolers.
I remember loving this book as a 14 year old but couldn’t remember much of the plot. I decided to re-read it now, at 24, and I can see why I loved it. The author is able to capture a lot of the truth of what it feels like to be young. The vivid descriptions of each state let you feel like you’ve also traveled across the country. It was good and nostalgic to listen to but if you’ve never read this book I strongly recommend starting with a physical copy. The story telling style involves various visuals that are better served on paper.

I really liked this book! I am glad i didn't start on this one though. Although it was really good. I loved going along with Amy and Rodger on there road trip. I loved how she put Amy's POV like how she was scared of what Rodger would think of her like any 16 year old girl would.

I'm J E A L O U S!
I am supercalifragilistic jealous of their epic detour. MAN did I ever want to be on it. If you love America, travel, hot boys, unexpected "detours", full interesting characters, fun, laughter, music, love ECT. Then this is the book for you.
Its inspiring, fun, heavy, and lighthearted. I KNOW! Narrator was also great, not distracting and a good flow.
So what are you waiting for? Get to it!

Teen Road Trip
This story was a good idea that could have been done much better. The writing was weak in too many points, and needed some quality editing. (For example, sagebrush is not pluralized with an "es" ) The characters were not completely likable to me, and remained quite vapid and flat for most of the story. These young people seemed pretty self-absorbed and uniformed, even for their age and education level considering some of the experiences and hardships they (especially Amy) had been through. I did start to connect with them and like them a little better by the end of the story. There were some more touching scenes that did resonate and seem genuine (for example when Amy goes to see her brother). The fast-food and car-snack descriptions became a bit repetitive.
What I did like: The pace and the flow of the story was well done, even if the ending was a little bit (rushed?) or abrupt. I really enjoyed the unplanned stops and the people they met along the way. The idea of ditching the map and itinerary and "winging it" was a fun premise. I did like Roger's character, the way he was respectful toward Amy, just being friendly and not pushing anything. He seems like a good guy. I liked the way their friendship grew and their feelings for each other developed.
I would have liked more information and more of a resolution at the ending. However, the ending works for the most part ONLY because of the whole premise of this story about taking detours and not having an agenda mapped out.
Overall, I would recommend this for at least a one-time listen. The narrator did a good job with the story as is. IMHO I would just not consider it a "keeper" for the favorites shelf or re-listen.
