Publisher's summary

A woman’s heart dares to defy the rules of Victorian society in USA Today bestselling author Caroline Fyffe’s novel of romance, royalty, and a little revenge.

In Kent, England, the arrival of Beranger Northcott, Duke of Brightshire, causes a stir. Because with the duke comes his new American bride, who isn’t quite what anyone expects. By accepting the hand of her beloved, Emma Brinkman went from hardworking Colorado rancher to duchess. Now she’s expected to comport herself as nobility. Overnight. For Emma - stifled, homesick, and unable to shake the feeling she’s being watched - the metamorphosis is a challenge. And if Emma’s suspicions are correct, perhaps even a dangerous one.

Fortunately, Emma has found a trusted friend in the orphaned Charlotte, Brightshire’s scullery maid. Charlotte longs to experience - if only for a moment - the luxuries and gentry romance that come with a titled life. When one of the duke’s handsome cousins takes notice of Charlotte, the castle kitchen is set abuzz with speculation.

In navigating their two different stations, both servant and duchess alike will discover all they have in common - from secret fantasies to daring hearts to upending the rules of society. And that finding their places in the world - and love - is a dream that can come true - no matter the risks.

What do I say about..sigh..another ‘Harlequin Romance’

Ok I’ve read Caroline Fyffe book on the ‘sisters’ or ‘The Five Sisters Ranch’ series and I couldn’t wait for this one to come out. I completely remember how Emma & Berenger fell in love in Colorado—ᴀɴᴅ no matter how it came across with a more like a ‘June to July romance, fell in love & got married” pretty faster than June to July. The Duke by his late father in England, Berenger was determined to marry Emma. Of course she wss reluctant, but at the late minute while one of her other sisters was getting married, Beranger told her he had to leave the Colorado to go back to claim his name, so the real heir would get what was deserved. That was all a review on how they met & fell in love....That’s where the book shouldn’t have become ‘An American Duchess’.

Nothing wrong with the narration, in fact she gave excellent voices as a Londoner, Yorkshire, proper English & as Emma with an American accent.

Maybe it’s me since I’m originally from the 🇬🇧 but Emma travels a long voyage to a mansion and WHY during this LONG voyage, I can’t believe Berenger doesn’t give her what to expect, how a Duchess should understand the snobby rich Brits?! It was as if they spoke about nothing on this?! Especially since she was now going to be the woman in charge of A LOT OF ROOMS, household servants, etc. But the minute she arrives she seriously acts like she knew nothing & started giving rides to strange lower class set of people and doesn’t know the difference between a foot man or a butler?!

It frustrated me to no end, because Berenger didn’t want her to change, and loved her naivety. But that’s the way it was run in the 1800’s with Dukes & their Duchess! It’s no different today either! So no matter how much he loved her as herself, he had an obligation to show her the robes & give her all the info about his step mother, who hated him & Emma made sure she found out about this horrible woman.

Sʜᴇ ᴅɪᴅ...ʙᴜᴛ ɪᴛ ɪs SOOO sʟᴏᴡ ɢᴏɪɴɢ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴇɢɪɴɴɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ɪ ʟɪᴛᴇʀᴀʟʟʏ ʜᴀᴅ ᴛᴏ sᴛᴀʀᴛ ᴏᴠᴇʀ manny TIMES cuz fell asleep many TIMES listening!

As far as the rest of the book. There were so many other characters and it was if I was reading “Downton Abby”! Many times it was too many to remember. I love books with other characters than the main ones, but when these appeared, I again fell asleep.

So In my ending, don’t NOT read the book because it wasn’t my favorite! I can be very picky, but it’s just me. If certain characters were not involved, about 30-40 minutes could have been edited from the book, and my review may have different. As I said in my title it’s too close to a Harlequin Romance, and that’s not why I decided to read it, those are books I try my hardest to stay away from!

Two love stories for the price of one

I loved this audio book. The narrator did a wonderful job making sure you could tell the difference between characters. We have two main love stories and a mystery that needs solved. I didn't solve the mystery as the author made so many twist and turns I was quite unable to decide who it was. I can't talk about that though as you need to give this book a listening to. It is really good.

Pretty good.

Simpering romantic proclamations aside, this book is pretty entertaining. It seems rather predictable in the beginning, but the author adds little supernatural touches/folklore here and there that keep the story interesting. Narrator is fantastic.

compelling

the story was a parallel to Downton Abbey, in a way. Held my interest throughout.

an enjoyable read

This was an enjoyable read (or listen). I had a hard time getting into the book but I think that was due to outside interruptions. otherwise, a good plot and characters.
