About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Karen Ranney returns with the third heart-stirring novel in her latest series - a tale of deceit, desperate measures, and delirious desire.

Rose MacIain is a beautiful woman with a secret. Desperate and at her wits' end, she crafts a fake identity for herself, one that Duncan MacIain will be unable to resist. But she doesn't realize that posing as the widow of the handsome Scotsman's cousin is more dangerous than she knew. And when a simmering attraction rises up between them, she begins to regret the whole charade.

Duncan is determined to resist the tempting Rose, no matter how much he admires her arresting beauty and headstrong spirit. When he agrees to accompany her on her quest, their desire for each other only burns hotter. The journey tests his resolve as their close quarters fuel the fire that crackles between them.

When the truth comes to light, these two stubborn people must put away their pride and along the way discover that their dreams of love are all they need.

I really enjoyed the theme and character arcs in this book. The relationship between the characters was developed nicely and I appreciated the strength of the characters. The book addressed some sad and disturbing moments in American history, but I liked how the author highlighted the small ways people could have made a difference.

Sweet and Sassy couple exposing so ugly truths about America.

I really love how the side characters are portrayed in this romance. I love how the heroine is taken right into the bosom of the family home and treated like she's been there from the start. If only she didn't put herself into clearly dangerous situations time and again. Good thing the hero is around to save her!

Enjoyable and sweet

The plot was wonderful. It never was boring. Built well. The relationship between Rose in Duncan was believable. It was really a great story

Great story!

But not great, thus the 4 star rating. I liked this book and the performance was flawless except for the Scottish ascent. Ms Reading seemed inconsistent. Sometimes Duncan gad no ascent at all. The story was also very good with the exception of two things. I thoroughly dislike a female character who puts herself in danger by sheer stupidity. The confrontation and events that followed were absolutely critical to the story, I would have liked to see the author show ingenuity to create the circumstance instead of falling back in the dumb female routine. Also. A lot of the story was based on the Raven's ability to run the blockade, yet it was barely mentioned.

Very good story and performance

This book is my first Ranney book, and I liked the approach from an American immigrant family working to touch base with its European branch…it gives other historical aspects I hadn’t really thought about before. A nice storyline with just enough romance without too much hand wringing…I enjoyed the narration as well.

I really enjoyed the series up to this point. The narrator was a bad choice in my opinion.
She would forget to do the Scottish accents quite often.

The story it self was nice.

Narrator not the best
