About this listen

Number one New York Times best-selling author Stephanie Laurens returns with a new series that captures the simmering desires and intrigues of early Victorians as only she can. Ryder Cavanaugh's stepsiblings are determined to make their own marks in London society. Seeking fortune and passion, the Cavanaughs will delight listeners with their bold exploits.

An independent nobleman

Lord Randolph Cavanaugh is loyal and devoted - but only to family. To the rest of the world, he's aloof and untouchable, a respected and driven entrepreneur. But Rand yearns for more in life, and when he travels to Buckinghamshire to review a recent investment, he discovers a passionate woman who will challenge his rigid self-control....

A determined lady

Felicia Throgmorton intends to keep her family afloat. For decade, her father was consumed by his inventions, and now, months after his death, with their finances in ruins, her brother insists on continuing their father's tinkering. Felicia is desperate to hold together what's left of the estate. Then she discovers she must help persuade their latest investor that her father's follies are a risk worth taking....

Together - the perfect team

Rand arrives at Throgmorton Hall to discover the invention on which he's staked his reputation has exploded, the inventor is not who he expected, and a fiercely intelligent woman now holds the key to his future success. But unflinching courage in the face of dismaying hurdles is a trait they share, and Rand and Felicia are forced to act together against ruthless foes to protect everything they hold dear.

steam engine more prominent than romance

Protecting a steam engine from sabotage was the majority of the story. The romance was the minor component. A couple of kisses was all it took to solidify this couple.

Based on facts. Loved it.

At first I was like blah blah but found it fascinating. Prince Albert brought so much forward progress to Britain.

It was okay.

Not having read the author's other series, I had trouble following some of the names and subplots. Obviously certain characters appear in the other series, so they aren't all that fleshed out in this book. It made relationships seem a little shallow. And basically the whole epilogue was wasted on me. But overall I liked the story?

It's a personal pet peeve when love scenes don't accurately portray the way that human bodies (especially female orgasms) work. I automatically deduct at least 1 star from every book whose love scenes make me roll my eyes. Stories would be better off left as *closed door* romances than feature such ridiculous content. - This book definitely lost a star.

For the whatever reason, Justin Hill's pronunciation of certain words bothered me. He wasn't bad though.

Too slow- skip it

So bummed as I wanted to love it. I had read so much about the Cynsters. So much inner monologue but sadly it was also uninteresting. The narrators delivery was much too dramatic for the very mundane thoughts. I mystery, barely any romance and WAAAYYYY too long.

Not Mechanical

I had to restart the book about 1/3 in ..I wasn't expecting the carriage to be suck a large portion of the story. since I wasn't interested in that aspect, I didn't pay attention to what was going on. Average story but not the storyline I normally enjoy. I paid abt $5.

Pointless

Why bother??? If you need something to put you to sleep, listen to this. Or don’t bother.

Boring

Not up to Lauren’s standards. Heavy on technical details, light on romance. A disappointment. Boring.

Too much talking about thinking abd planning.

I felt like I am treated as a person who needs to be told over and over why this and that is important and what the plan is. Really annoying and boring. Does not feel like it is the same person writing the stories now as the stories from few years ago.
