About this listen

They’re hoping this visit is a return journey—but it might be a one-way ticket to murder.

July 1912. Lady Hardcastle and her tenacious lady’s maid, Florence Armstrong, are enjoying a convivial gathering at the home of their dear friends, the Farley-Strouds. The only fly in the idyllic ointment seems to be the lack of musical entertainment for the forthcoming summer party—until, that is, Lady Hardcastle’s brother Harry calls with news of a murder.

Harry dispatches them to Bristol on behalf of the Secret Service Bureau, with instructions to prevent the local police from uncovering too much about the victim. It seems an intriguing mystery—all the more so when they find a connection between the killer and an impending visit from an Austrian trade delegation, set to feature a very important guest…

Summoned to London to help with some very important security arrangements, the intrepid duo will have to navigate sceptical bureaucrats, Cockney gangsters and shadowy men in distinctive hats in their attempts to foil an explosive—and internationally significant—threat.

Critic reviews

“Longtime series narrator Elizabeth Knowelden's performance brings two occasional government agents to life: Lady Hardcastle, a genteel widow with a less-than-genteel past, and Florence Armstrong, her companion and confidante, who is also a martial arts expert.… Knowelden's Lady Hardcastle is gentility itself—until she's faced with blatant misogyny. Then the quick-witted lady becomes charming steel. Florence gets just the right mix of toughness and savvy, while Knowelden's secondary characters have genuine personalities. Fun listening.” AudioFile Magazine

Thoroughly Enjoyed This One!

I've been a fan of this series since the beginning but this addition has a slightly different feel to it. It feels like the author has hit his stride.

This is not 'just' a murder mystery. The focus is on the efforts to stop an assassination attempt which could (did) start WWI.

While the core relationships still hold firm, we get the opportunity to see Lady Hardcastle and Flo do what they do best.

The writing is crisp and the twists and turns kept me hanging in there.

Excellent addition to a great series!

Absolutely love these ladies!

Fantastic as always! They keep getting better! Always sad when I have to wait for more, but honestly I listen to all of them over and over. I’d listen to even a story about Emily and Flo on a trip to the store! Love them and the dynamic! Thought it was awesome to seeing a new side of Harry! All around a wonderful book that I can guarantee I will listen to several times more! Thank you Mr. Kinsey for another brilliant book!

Twists and turns make this such a fun read!

Lady Hardcastle and Flo are at it again. This time we get to see them going through one of their mysterious “missions” first hand! I definitely didn’t see that ending coming! Assassination on the Agenda was just as thrilling and enjoyable as the rest of the series has been, if not more. Highly recommended!

Visiting old friends

It was like visiting old friends. I love the banter between the ladies. I wish they stayed in their little town because I missed the usual cast of characters, but it was as good as the other stories. And the narrator is amazing! I highly recommend it.

Loved it even though it was a spy story

I loved all of the previous books in this series and this book was no exception. I love the candid relationship between Lady Hardcastle and Flo that made the stories very enjoyable. This story, as usual, captured your attention right away and kept it throughout the book. You don’t have to skip forward to get to any progress in the story, you want to listen to every bit of it. Although this was a spy story, it didn’t detract from the nature of the series. It still had the interesting twist and turns in the story. I didn’t anticipate the true culprit. This was a great story to listen to and I love Elizabeth Knoweldon’s narration. She IS Flo to me. Great character voices. This spy story was a change from the previous themes and it was a good break from usual but please don’t make this a trend. I don’t like that Lady Hardcastle and Flo have a boss that they have to obey. I like their relationship with the Bristol Chief Inspector and that they have no organizational structured pattern to follow or answer to. I eagerly look forward to the next book.

What fun!

Great mystery with little blood or guts and nearly no angst. I love these mysteries. The narrator is nearly flawless; a bit of a different voice for the two main characters in the early chapters, but back to series norm for the grand finish.

If you are looking for a voice for your long drive or keeping your mind busy while your hands are doing something rote, this might be a perfect soundtrack. YMMV.

I love the humor and witty dialogue

I have been waiting for this book and am thrilled to get to listen to this expert narrator read the prose by this expert author. I just love the duo of Lady Hardcastle and her tiny servant, and all the interesting situations they get in. I did miss the little “talk” at the end that have been at others in this series in which some history related to the story is explained. Other than that I give it 10 stars!

Another wonderful adventure, one of the best in the series

It is always a pleasure to spend time in the company of Flo and Lady Hardcastle. This episode is one of my favorites. Their witty repartee and gentle sarcasm is entertaining and charming. The plots are quite believable. The way they make quick work of masculine derision and old-boy attitudes are a key aspect of their appeal. Never daunted by nay sayers the daring duo save the day. I like the egalitarian ethos of the village even though it exists within a class system with clearly defined roles for all the characters. The ending of this book makes me hope that there will be many more to follow!
