About this listen

New Yorker Tara Meehan's first trip to Galway may be her last....

Tara never imagined her introduction to Ireland like this - carrying her mam's ashes to honor her final request: "Tell Johnny I'm sorry.... Take me home." She's never met her mam's estranged brother, Johnny Meehan, who owns an architectural salvage business in Galway. Although Tara is immediately charmed by the medieval city, the locals seem wary of strangers, and a gypsy warns her that death is all around.

When Tara arrives at her uncle's stone cottage, the prophesy seems true. A dead man lies sprawled over the threshold in a pool of blood. The victim turns out to be Johnny's wealthiest client, and her missing uncle is the Garda's number one suspect. In trying to find Johnny and solve the crime, Tara uncovers her mam and uncle's troubled past. But with a desperate killer about, she had better mind herself, or they'll be tossing her ashes in Galway Bay....

Yankee misfit

The story is a drawn out murder mystery with a New York yuppy wishing to be Irish. She acccuses, interrogates and lies to most everyone she meets as a method of ingratiation. Is that the Irish way?
(Not nearly as enjoyable as her Village Mystery series. The protagonist there is almost as surly but witty and possibly likeable.)

Not My Favorite

I love and adore the Village Mysteries by this author, but this new series is not my favorite. The writing was okay, but I just didn’t like the lead character. (No wonder the citizens of Galway disliked her.) The narration was lovely, but I don’t think I’ll continue with this series.

Entertaining Book

I really enjoy this author. I have listened to several of her books, and I was always entertained by her stories. The narrator of this book was also very good.

Mistrust abounds

Overall story should have been great. Tara mistrusts everyone. But the author’s poor use of time makes the story disjointed. You have to tell yourself to just go with it. Loads of characters that obscure whodunnit.

More for teenagers

The story was well thought
But the tone Tarah took to talk to the officer at the very beginning already made me realize that there would be no subtlilty in the mystery. A rebel confronting at first sight ... Teenagers would appreciate that... But after hundreds of polars and mystery books read, I seek for a writing that makes me think, doubt, guess and totally be surprised by a few twists leading to a wise ending.

Good light listening

Good beach listening; however, the narrator’s attempt at an American accent was a little tough to take.

Ugh

I should’ve known… Story was ok, but the writing was not. So trite and full of awful cliches. The mystery was predictable throughout. Eye rolling unnecessary romance. The narration is well done. Good descriptions of Galway to get me excited for an upcoming trip though.
